Nipple pain?

After having lunch today and taking a nap, I noticed that my left nipple is tender to the touch.
I have checked around for any lumps, but I didn't find any.
However, I do feel tenderness when pressing below the left breast.
Should I see a doctor, or can I wait for it to resolve on its own?

A-Rui, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/11/08

Nipple pain can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, and understanding when to seek medical attention is crucial for your health. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing localized pain in your left nipple, which you noticed after a meal and a nap. You have also checked for any lumps or hard areas around the breast and found none.
First, it's important to recognize that nipple pain can arise from various causes, some of which may require medical evaluation. Common causes of nipple pain include hormonal changes, infections, skin conditions, or even benign breast conditions. Here are some factors to consider regarding your symptoms:
1. Hormonal Changes: Many women experience breast tenderness or nipple pain due to hormonal fluctuations, especially during their menstrual cycle. If you are close to your menstrual period, this could be a normal occurrence.

2. Infections: Conditions such as mastitis or an abscess can cause localized pain, swelling, and redness. If you notice any signs of infection, such as warmth, redness, or discharge from the nipple, it is essential to seek medical attention.

3. Skin Conditions: Dermatitis or eczema can affect the nipple area, leading to pain and discomfort. If you observe any rashes or changes in the skin around the nipple, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.

4. Benign Breast Conditions: Conditions like fibrocystic breast changes can lead to pain and tenderness. While these are generally not serious, they can cause discomfort and may require management.

5. Other Causes: Sometimes, nipple pain can be related to issues outside the breast, such as musculoskeletal pain or nerve irritation. If the pain is sharp or radiates to other areas, it may be worth discussing with a doctor.

Given that you have already checked for lumps and found none, and if the pain is mild and not accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as discharge, fever, or significant swelling), you might consider monitoring the situation for a short period. However, if the pain persists, worsens, or if you develop any additional symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention.

In summary, while nipple pain can often be benign, it is essential to pay attention to accompanying symptoms and changes in your body. If you have any doubts or concerns, especially if the pain does not resolve or if you notice any unusual changes, it is always best to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment if necessary. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don't hesitate to reach out to a doctor if you feel uncertain about your symptoms.
