Discomfort in the scrotum is common?
Hello, Dr.
Hsu: Recently, I have been experiencing discomfort and slight pain in the left testicle area of my scrotum, especially when there is friction from clothing or during vigorous movements such as running or jumping.
The discomfort is particularly noticeable during these activities, but I do not feel anything unusual while sitting, standing, or sleeping.
Additionally, in the morning when it is cold, I experience sharp pain and discomfort when the scrotum contracts.
Upon self-examination, I found no visible abnormalities, and there is no issue when I touch the area.
I would like to ask Dr.
Hsu what this condition might be.
Could it be an injury to the testicle or something else? Thank you, doctor!

Hello, you can check if it is a varicocele.
Of course, it is still advisable to seek medical attention nearby.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

More Info
Discomfort in the scrotum can arise from a variety of causes, and it’s important to understand the potential underlying issues and when to seek medical help. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing discomfort primarily on the left side of the scrotum, particularly during physical activities such as running or jumping, and also in response to temperature changes.
Possible Causes of Scrotal Discomfort
1. Inguinal Hernia: This occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. It can cause discomfort in the groin and scrotum, especially during physical activities.
2. Epididymitis: This is an inflammation of the epididymis, the tube that stores and carries sperm. It can cause pain and swelling in the scrotum and may be associated with urinary tract infections or sexually transmitted infections.
3. Testicular Torsion: This is a medical emergency where the spermatic cord becomes twisted, cutting off the blood supply to the testicle. Symptoms include sudden, severe pain in the scrotum and swelling. If you experience this, seek immediate medical attention.
4. Varicocele: This is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, which can cause a dull ache or discomfort, particularly after physical activity.
5. Hydrocele: This is a fluid-filled sac around a testicle that can cause swelling and discomfort, particularly noticeable when standing or during physical activity.
6. Trauma or Injury: Even if you do not recall a specific injury, minor trauma can lead to discomfort in the scrotal area.
7. Skin Irritation: Friction from clothing or chafing can cause discomfort, especially during activities that involve movement.
When to Seek Medical Help
It is advisable to seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Severe Pain: If the discomfort escalates to severe pain, especially if it is sudden and intense.
- Swelling: If you notice swelling in the scrotum or testicles.
- Changes in Color: Any discoloration of the scrotum or testicles should be evaluated.
- Fever: If you develop a fever along with the discomfort, it may indicate an infection.
- Persistent Symptoms: If the discomfort persists for more than a few days or worsens over time.
- Nausea or Vomiting: These symptoms, especially when combined with scrotal pain, warrant immediate medical evaluation.
Conclusion
While your symptoms may not indicate a serious condition, it is essential to monitor them closely. Given that you have not noticed any external abnormalities or significant tenderness upon examination, it may be a less severe issue such as a mild strain or irritation. However, if the discomfort continues or worsens, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to rule out any serious conditions. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure proper treatment.
