Shoulder and hand pain with swelling?
Two days ago, I was in a minor car accident.
At the time, I only noticed some abrasions on my knee and felt some pain, thinking I had no other injuries.
However, when I got home, I gradually started to feel significant pain in the area where my right shoulder connects to my upper arm, and lifting it has become quite difficult due to the pain.
I also suddenly noticed that my entire hand is swollen and lacks color.
When I went to the emergency room, the doctor took X-rays and said there were no fractures.
They only prescribed pain relief medication.
Today, I can lift my arm a bit more, but I still have persistent pain near my scapula.
I would like to know what areas I might have injured.
Should I just leave it alone to heal gradually, or should I see a specialist?

More Info
After a minor car accident, it is not uncommon to experience pain and discomfort in various areas of the body, particularly in the shoulder and arm. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing significant pain in your right shoulder and upper arm, along with swelling and difficulty lifting your arm. Although the X-ray results indicated that there were no fractures, this does not rule out soft tissue injuries, which are often the cause of pain and swelling after such incidents.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Soft Tissue Injuries: The pain you are experiencing could be due to a soft tissue injury, such as a strain or sprain of the muscles, tendons, or ligaments around the shoulder joint. These injuries can occur even if there is no visible damage to the bones. Common soft tissue injuries include rotator cuff injuries, shoulder impingement, or tendonitis.
2. Swelling and Bruising: The swelling in your arm could be a result of inflammation due to the injury. When soft tissues are damaged, the body responds by sending more blood to the area, which can lead to swelling. The lack of color in your arm may indicate that there is no significant vascular injury, but it is still important to monitor the swelling.
3. Pain and Mobility Issues: The pain you feel when trying to lift your arm is a sign that the muscles or tendons may be strained. If you are unable to lift your arm without significant pain, it may indicate a more serious injury, such as a rotator cuff tear or shoulder instability.
Recommended Actions
1. Rest and Ice: Initially, it is crucial to rest the affected area and avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Applying ice to the shoulder for 15-20 minutes every few hours can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain.
2. Pain Management: Continue taking the pain medications prescribed by your doctor. Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can also help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
3. Physical Therapy: If your symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if they worsen, it may be beneficial to consult a physical therapist. They can provide targeted exercises to improve mobility and strength in your shoulder and arm.
4. Follow-Up with a Specialist: If the pain persists or if you notice any new symptoms, such as increased swelling, numbness, or tingling in your arm, it is advisable to see an orthopedic specialist. They may recommend further imaging studies, such as an MRI, to assess for soft tissue injuries that may not be visible on X-rays.
5. Avoid Strain: Until you have a clearer understanding of the extent of your injury, avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities that could aggravate your shoulder.
Conclusion
In summary, while your X-ray results are reassuring in terms of bone integrity, the symptoms you are experiencing suggest a possible soft tissue injury. It is essential to manage your pain, allow for adequate rest, and seek further evaluation if your condition does not improve. Remember that recovery from soft tissue injuries can take time, and patience is key. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or if they worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical attention.
