Pain in the heel and hand?

I have pain when pressing on my knee, and it also hurts when I press in the middle of the kneecap while my leg is bent.
I can't run, and I feel pain near the bones beside my hip.
Sometimes, I also experience pain in my shoulder bones when I turn.
Can you help me with this? Thank you!

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/01/05

Dr. Fan Hongbin reply Orthopedics

Hello: Regarding your inquiry, I would like to ask a few questions first: First, have you engaged in any intense exercise or overuse recently? Second, have you ever had any collisions or injuries in the past? Third, may I ask how old you are? Fourth, does your knee pain extend from your hip? Based on the symptoms you described, it is really difficult to determine what might be wrong, so I recommend that you seek medical attention nearby.
Your symptoms need to be thoroughly examined and carefully evaluated by a physician, and only through physical examination and radiological tests can the true issue be diagnosed and the most effective treatment plan be formulated.
Thank you for your message!

More Info

Knee pain and discomfort in related joints can be a complex issue, often stemming from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing pain in multiple areas, including your knee, hip, and shoulder. This could indicate a broader musculoskeletal issue that may involve joint, tendon, or ligament problems.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Knee Pain: The pain you feel when pressing on your knee, particularly around the kneecap (patella), could be indicative of several conditions. One common issue is patellofemoral pain syndrome, which is often characterized by pain around the kneecap, especially during activities like running, squatting, or climbing stairs. This condition can arise from overuse, muscle imbalances, or misalignment of the knee joint.

2. Hip Pain: The discomfort near your hip could be related to hip joint issues, such as bursitis or tendinitis. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between tissues. Tendinitis refers to inflammation of the tendons around the hip joint, often due to repetitive motion or strain.

3. Shoulder Pain: Pain in the shoulder when turning could suggest rotator cuff issues or shoulder impingement syndrome. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder. Overuse or injury can lead to inflammation and pain, especially during certain movements.

Possible Connections
The interconnectedness of your symptoms suggests that they may not be isolated issues. For instance, compensatory movements due to knee pain can lead to altered gait mechanics, which may place additional stress on your hip and shoulder joints. This can create a cycle of discomfort across multiple joints.

Recommended Actions
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider, such as an orthopedic specialist or a physical therapist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including physical examinations and imaging studies (like X-rays or MRIs), to determine the exact cause of your pain.

2. Physical Therapy: Engaging in a physical therapy program can be highly beneficial. A physical therapist can design a personalized exercise regimen to strengthen the muscles around your knee, hip, and shoulder, improve flexibility, and correct any biomechanical issues contributing to your pain.

3. Activity Modification: While you are experiencing pain, it may be wise to modify your activities. Avoid high-impact exercises like running until you receive a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Low-impact activities, such as swimming or cycling, may be more suitable during this time.

4. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), can help manage pain and inflammation. However, consult with your healthcare provider before starting any medication.

5. Strengthening and Stretching: Incorporating strengthening exercises for your quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles can provide better support for your knee and hip joints. Stretching exercises can also improve flexibility and reduce tension in the muscles surrounding these joints.

Conclusion
Your symptoms of knee pain, hip discomfort, and shoulder pain may be interconnected, stemming from underlying musculoskeletal issues. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to identify the root causes and develop an effective treatment plan. With appropriate management, including physical therapy and lifestyle modifications, you can work towards alleviating your pain and improving your overall joint function. Remember, early intervention is key to preventing further complications and enhancing your quality of life.
