Frequent urination after cystoscopy?

I underwent a cystoscopy last Friday, and the results indicated inflammation of the lower urinary tract.
I have been continuously taking antibiotics.
The sharp pain and frequent urination I experienced after the cystoscopy had subsided by Monday and Tuesday.
However, in the past two days, I suddenly started experiencing frequent urination again, and at times, it feels like urine is about to leak from the junction between the penis and the urethra.
During urination, I also feel like that junction is somewhat obstructed.
During the procedure, I felt excruciating pain when the scope was inserted through the urethra into the bladder.
I would like to ask the doctor whether this could be due to injury to the organs during the procedure or if it is just a common postoperative reaction.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, based on your description, your frequent urination is likely not related to the cystoscopy.
After two weeks, it is theoretically possible that you may have another urinary tract infection.
You can have your urine tested and cultured for confirmation.
As for the sensations experienced during the cystoscopy, they should be considered normal.
If you have any further questions or need clarification, feel free to ask, and we can discuss it further.
This response is from Dr.

Post-cystoscopy urinary frequency is a common concern among patients who have undergone this procedure. Cystoscopy, which involves inserting a thin tube with a camera into the bladder through the urethra, can cause temporary irritation and inflammation of the urinary tract. Your experience of initial relief followed by a resurgence of urinary frequency and discomfort is not uncommon and can be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, the cystoscopy itself can lead to transient symptoms such as frequency, urgency, and discomfort. The procedure can irritate the bladder lining, leading to inflammation, which may manifest as increased urinary frequency. This is often a result of the bladder becoming overly sensitive after the procedure. In your case, the initial relief you felt after the procedure may have been due to the resolution of acute inflammation, but the return of symptoms could indicate a few possibilities.

One potential cause for your renewed urinary frequency could be a urinary tract infection (UTI). Even though you are on antibiotics, it is possible to develop a UTI post-procedure, especially if bacteria were introduced during the cystoscopy. Symptoms of a UTI can include increased frequency, urgency, and sometimes pain during urination. It would be prudent to have a urine culture performed to rule out this possibility.

Another consideration is that the sensation of urine feeling like it is leaking or the difficulty in urination could be related to the physical trauma of the cystoscopy. The procedure can cause temporary swelling or bruising in the urethra or bladder neck, which might lead to a feeling of obstruction or difficulty in urination. This sensation can sometimes be exacerbated by anxiety or stress related to the procedure itself.

Additionally, if you experienced significant pain during the procedure, it could have contributed to a heightened sensitivity in the area, leading to a perception of urinary urgency or frequency. The bladder and urethra can become more reactive after such an event, and this can manifest as increased urgency or difficulty in starting urination.

It is also worth noting that psychological factors can play a role in urinary symptoms. Anxiety about urination, especially after a procedure like cystoscopy, can lead to a cycle of increased urgency and frequency. This is sometimes referred to as "psychogenic" urinary frequency, where the mind influences the bladder's behavior.

In conclusion, while some degree of urinary frequency and discomfort can be expected after a cystoscopy, the persistence or worsening of these symptoms warrants further evaluation. It is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may recommend a urine analysis and culture to check for infection, as well as a follow-up examination to assess for any potential complications from the procedure. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will be key in addressing your concerns and ensuring your recovery.

Hello: Most likely there is inflammation, just at different levels. You should go to the urology department for an examination (avoid your menstrual period). Interstitial cystitis requires a cystoscopy for diagnosis. Wishing you good health.
