The bones located beneath the chest?

I would like to ask the doctor, my bones below the chest (on both sides) are very prominent, and it becomes more noticeable when I lie down.
I am not sure what the cause is.
Can it be improved? This is really bothering me...

Julia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/03/02

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

Julia: If you are thinner and have less subcutaneous fat, your bones may appear more prominent, which doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with the bones themselves.
If you are concerned about the appearance, you may need to consult with a plastic surgeon.

More Info

Understanding prominent bones below the chest can be a concern for many individuals, and it is essential to approach this issue with a comprehensive understanding of potential causes and solutions. The prominence of bones in the lower chest area, particularly the ribs and the xiphoid process (the small bone at the bottom of the sternum), can be attributed to various factors.

Causes of Prominent Bones Below the Chest
1. Anatomical Variation: Some individuals naturally have more prominent rib cages or xiphoid processes due to genetic factors. This anatomical variation can lead to a more noticeable appearance of these bones, especially when lying down.

2. Body Composition: The amount of subcutaneous fat and muscle mass in the chest and abdominal area can significantly influence the visibility of bones. Individuals with lower body fat percentages may find their bones more prominent, as there is less soft tissue to cover them.

3. Posture: Poor posture can lead to a misalignment of the spine and rib cage, making the bones appear more pronounced. Slouching or leaning forward can accentuate the visibility of the ribs and other structures.

4. Muscle Development: Well-developed pectoral muscles can push the rib cage outward, making the bones more prominent. Conversely, underdeveloped muscles may not provide enough coverage, leading to a more pronounced appearance of the ribs.

5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine) or pectus excavatum (a condition where the breastbone is sunken into the chest), can cause changes in the rib cage's appearance. If there are accompanying symptoms such as pain or discomfort, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional.

Solutions and Management
1. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: If the prominence of the bones is concerning, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies (like X-rays) to rule out any underlying conditions.

2. Posture Correction: Improving posture through exercises that strengthen the back and core muscles can help align the spine and rib cage better. Activities such as yoga or Pilates can be beneficial in promoting better posture.

3. Body Composition Management: If body fat percentage is a concern, a balanced diet and regular exercise can help manage body composition. Strength training can also help build muscle mass in the chest area, which may provide more coverage over the bones.

4. Physical Therapy: If there are issues related to posture or muscle imbalances, working with a physical therapist can provide tailored exercises and strategies to improve alignment and reduce prominence.

5. Surgical Options: In cases where the prominence is due to a deformity (like pectus excavatum), surgical options may be available. However, this is typically considered only when there are significant functional or aesthetic concerns.

6. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and proper hydration can contribute to overall well-being and may help in managing body composition.

Conclusion
Prominent bones below the chest can arise from various factors, including anatomical variations, body composition, posture, and muscle development. While it can be a source of concern, understanding the underlying causes can help in determining appropriate solutions. If the prominence is accompanied by discomfort or other symptoms, seeking medical advice is crucial. With the right approach, it is often possible to manage and improve the situation effectively.

Prominent ribs are generally not indicative of any specific issues. Scoliosis may cause them to protrude slightly. If you are concerned, you can consider getting an X-ray.
