Irregular menstrual periods?
My menstrual cycle has been regular for many years, lasting about 3 days with light flow.
However, I had two periods in February on the 1st and the 25th, both with a flow similar to usual.
Then on March 17th, I had another period, but this time the flow was very light and has lasted for 5 days.
What could be the issue? Should I wait until it’s completely finished to see a doctor and get a Pap smear, or is it better to go now while I'm still experiencing bleeding? Thank you for your response.

Hello: If there are changes in menstrual flow or cycle, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist to understand the underlying issues.
You do not need to wait until your period is over; the doctor will arrange for examinations based on your condition.
Remember to have your annual Pap smear.
Thank you.

More Info
Irregular menstrual cycles can be concerning, especially when there are changes in frequency, duration, or flow. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced two menstrual periods in February, followed by another one in March that lasted longer than usual with a lighter flow. This change in your cycle could be attributed to several factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, or underlying medical conditions.
1. Understanding Your Symptoms: The fact that you had two periods in February and then a prolonged, lighter period in March suggests that your menstrual cycle is experiencing some irregularity. This could be due to anovulation (when the ovaries do not release an egg), which can lead to irregular bleeding. Other potential causes include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or uterine abnormalities such as fibroids or polyps.
2. When to Seek Medical Advice: It is generally advisable to consult a healthcare provider if you experience significant changes in your menstrual cycle, especially if these changes persist for more than a few months. Since you mentioned that your periods have been regular for years, this sudden change warrants a medical evaluation.
3. Timing of the Appointment: You asked whether to wait until your bleeding has stopped to see a doctor or to go now. If your bleeding is light and manageable, you might consider waiting until it has resolved to schedule your appointment. However, if you are experiencing any concerning symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad or tampon every hour), or if the bleeding lasts longer than a week, you should seek medical attention sooner rather than later.
4. What to Expect During the Visit: When you see your healthcare provider, they may perform a pelvic exam and possibly order tests such as blood work to check hormone levels, a pregnancy test, or imaging studies like an ultrasound to evaluate your reproductive organs. A Pap smear may also be performed if it is due, but it is not typically done during active bleeding.
5. Lifestyle Factors: In the meantime, consider any lifestyle factors that may be affecting your menstrual cycle. Stress, significant weight changes, excessive exercise, or changes in diet can all impact your hormonal balance and menstrual regularity. Keeping a menstrual diary can also help your healthcare provider understand your cycle better.
In conclusion, while occasional irregularities can happen, especially in response to stress or lifestyle changes, persistent changes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. It is essential to listen to your body and seek help if you feel something is not right. Your health is paramount, and addressing these changes early can help prevent potential complications in the future.
