How to Transfer Your Mother for Liver and Gallbladder Treatment at Chang Gung? - Gastroenterology and Hepatology

I have not been treated at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, but I would like to transfer to Chang Gung for liver and biliary treatment?

My mother went to the emergency room at Cathay General Hospital in Hsinchu two days ago due to abdominal pain.
She was diagnosed with liver enzymes exceeding a thousand, gallstones, and bile duct obstruction.
Currently, she is still waiting for a hospital bed in the emergency department, receiving only anti-inflammatory and pain relief treatment.
They mentioned that further examinations would be conducted once a bed is available.
I consulted with doctors at nearby clinics, and they recommended transferring her to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for treatment.
My question is, since my mother has never been treated at Chang Gung before, how can I arrange for her transfer? Additionally, how can I find out if there are available beds at Chang Gung for her transfer? We hope to initiate treatment as soon as possible, as my mother is in considerable discomfort.
I would greatly appreciate any guidance from the physician.
Thank you very much.

Dear Ms.
Lu,
Hello.
Transferring to another hospital is a choice made by the family.
Chang Gung Hospital will not reserve a bed in advance, and there are many patients waiting for beds.
However, necessary treatment and consultations with relevant departments will still be provided in the emergency department at Chang Gung.
Please remember to prepare all necessary information from Cathay for reference before the transfer.
Best regards,
Dr.

More Info

Transferring your mother for liver and gallbladder treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital is a crucial step, especially given her current condition of elevated liver enzymes, gallstones, and bile duct obstruction. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to facilitate this transfer and what you need to consider.

Steps for Transferring Your Mother to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital:
1. Consult with Current Medical Team: Since your mother is currently in the emergency department at Cathay General Hospital, the first step is to discuss her situation with the attending physicians. They can provide a thorough assessment of her condition and the urgency of her transfer. If they agree that a transfer is necessary, they can assist in coordinating the process.

2. Contact Chang Gung Memorial Hospital: Reach out to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital directly. You can call their emergency department or the admissions office to inquire about bed availability. It’s essential to explain your mother’s medical condition and the urgency of her situation. Hospitals often have protocols for accepting transfers, and they may require specific information about her current health status.

3. Prepare Medical Records: Ensure that you have all relevant medical records ready, including her diagnosis, treatment history, and any imaging studies (like CT scans or ultrasounds) that have been performed. This information will be vital for the medical team at Chang Gung to understand her condition and plan her treatment effectively.

4. Insurance and Financial Considerations: Check with your mother’s health insurance provider to understand what coverage is available for the transfer and subsequent treatment at Chang Gung. If there are any financial concerns, it’s best to address them upfront with the hospital’s billing department.

5. Transportation Arrangements: Once the transfer is approved, you will need to arrange for transportation. Depending on her condition, this could involve an ambulance service that can provide medical support during the transfer. Ensure that the transport team is informed about her medical needs during the journey.

6. Follow-Up Care: After the transfer, it’s crucial to stay in close contact with the medical team at Chang Gung. They will provide updates on her condition and the treatment plan. Be proactive in asking questions and understanding the next steps in her care.

Additional Considerations:
- Emergency Services: If your mother’s condition worsens while waiting for a transfer, do not hesitate to seek immediate emergency care. Her safety and health are the top priority.

- Support System: Ensure that family members are involved in the process. Having a support system can help manage the emotional and logistical challenges of transferring a loved one for medical treatment.

- Patient Advocacy: If you encounter any difficulties during the transfer process, consider seeking help from a patient advocate. Many hospitals have staff dedicated to assisting families with navigating healthcare systems.

Conclusion:
Transferring your mother to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for liver and gallbladder treatment is a significant step that requires careful coordination and communication with both her current medical team and the receiving hospital. By following the outlined steps and ensuring that all necessary information is prepared, you can facilitate a smoother transition for her care. Remember, the goal is to ensure she receives the treatment she needs as quickly as possible, so don’t hesitate to advocate for her health and well-being throughout this process.
