Side effects of psychiatric medications?
Hello, I would like to ask about the use of the antipsychotic medication Gendon (generic name: Olanzapine).
Recently, I experienced tongue numbness and was subsequently prescribed Artane (Trihexyphenidyl) to improve symptoms related to Parkinsonism.
Sometimes, I also experience involuntary tremors in my right hand and foot.
Could you please tell me which medication might be causing this and how to improve the situation? Thank you.
tī, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/04/17
Dr. Zhou Sunyuan reply Psychiatry
The medication Geodon (ziprasidone) you are taking has not been reported to cause tongue numbness based on clinical experience and literature.
It may be unrelated or an extremely rare side effect.
For the 5% chance of experiencing tremors, medication treatment is available.
Please discuss this with your outpatient physician.

When dealing with antipsychotic medications, understanding the potential side effects is crucial for both patients and caregivers. Medications like Gendon (likely a reference to a generic antipsychotic) can lead to various side effects, including neurological symptoms. The experience of tongue numbness and tremors in your hands and feet could be indicative of a few different issues related to the medications you are taking.
Antipsychotic medications, particularly first-generation (typical) antipsychotics, are known to cause extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), which include tremors, rigidity, and involuntary movements. These symptoms arise due to the blockade of dopamine receptors in the brain, particularly in areas that control movement. The addition of Artane (trihexyphenidyl), which is an anticholinergic medication, is often prescribed to counteract these side effects by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. However, it can also have its own side effects, such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and dizziness.
The tremors you are experiencing could be a side effect of either Gendon or Artane. It is essential to communicate these symptoms to your prescribing physician, as they may need to adjust your medication regimen. Sometimes, a dose adjustment or a switch to a different medication can alleviate these side effects. Additionally, if the tremors are severe or persistent, your doctor might consider adding or changing medications to better manage these symptoms.
In managing side effects, it is important to approach the situation holistically. Here are some strategies that may help:
1. Regular Monitoring: Keep a detailed log of your symptoms, including when they occur, their severity, and any other changes in your health. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in making informed decisions about your treatment.
2. Medication Review: Schedule regular follow-ups with your psychiatrist to review your medications. Discuss any side effects you are experiencing, and do not hesitate to ask about alternative medications that may have a lower risk of causing EPS.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporate stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or gentle exercise into your routine. These practices can help manage anxiety and improve overall well-being, which may also help mitigate some medication side effects.
4. Support System: Engage with support groups or counseling services. Connecting with others who are experiencing similar challenges can provide emotional support and practical advice.
5. Educate Yourself: Understanding your medications and their potential side effects can empower you to take an active role in your treatment. Ask your healthcare provider for educational resources or reputable websites where you can learn more.
6. Diet and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated. Certain dietary changes can sometimes help alleviate side effects, and proper hydration can improve overall health.
7. Avoid Alcohol and Recreational Drugs: These substances can exacerbate side effects and interfere with the effectiveness of your medications.
In conclusion, while antipsychotic medications can be effective in managing symptoms of schizophrenia and other mental health disorders, they can also lead to side effects that require careful management. Open communication with your healthcare provider is essential for finding the right balance in your treatment plan. If you experience troubling side effects like tremors or numbness, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance. Your health and comfort should always be a priority in your treatment journey.
