Dealing with Painful Foreskin Irritation: Causes and Remedies - Urology

The foreskin is torn?

Hello, this morning after masturbating, I experienced pain on the inner side of my foreskin.
Upon inspection, I found a red area (about 1.5 cm) that appears slightly broken.
This may be due to dryness of the glans during masturbation, combined with my phimosis issue.
Can I apply an ointment, such as a well-known topical cream? Also, if I leave it alone to heal on its own, will there be a risk of infection during the healing process? I do not have any sexual experience, and I am concerned about potential contamination from urine or dirt from clothing, etc.
Thank you.

Hello, you can use a non-irritating ointment; I generally recommend using an eye ointment.
Self-recovery is also possible, but you should avoid any signs of infection.
Additionally, when there is a wound, cleaning can be more challenging.
Once you have recovered, it is advisable to visit a hospital for an examination to determine if surgery is necessary.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

More Info

Dealing with painful foreskin irritation can be uncomfortable and concerning, especially when it involves symptoms like redness and broken skin. Based on your description, it seems that the irritation may be due to friction during masturbation, possibly exacerbated by the presence of phimosis (a condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted). Here’s a comprehensive overview of the potential causes, remedies, and considerations for your situation.

Causes of Foreskin Irritation
1. Friction and Dryness: As you mentioned, excessive friction during masturbation can lead to irritation. If the glans (the head of the penis) is dry, it can become more susceptible to injury.

2. Phimosis: This condition can make it difficult to retract the foreskin, leading to irritation and inflammation, especially if there is a lack of proper hygiene or if the area is not adequately cleaned.

3. Infection: While you mentioned that you do not have sexual experience, infections can still occur due to bacteria or fungi. Conditions like balanitis (inflammation of the glans) can arise from poor hygiene, irritants, or infections.

4. Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, irritation can be caused by allergic reactions to soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the genital area.

Remedies and Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: Applying a gentle, non-irritating ointment may help soothe the area. Over-the-counter creams like hydrocortisone can reduce inflammation, but it’s essential to avoid using any products that contain fragrances or harsh chemicals. If you’re considering using a common ointment like "小護士藥膏" (Little Nurse ointment), ensure it is suitable for sensitive areas and does not contain irritants.

2. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water. Avoid scrubbing the irritated area, as this can worsen the condition.

3. Moisturizing: If dryness is a concern, consider using a water-based lubricant during masturbation to reduce friction. This can help prevent further irritation.

4. Avoiding Irritants: Until the area heals, avoid any products that may irritate the skin, including scented soaps, lotions, and tight clothing.

5. Rest: Allow the area to heal by avoiding any activities that may exacerbate the irritation, such as masturbation or sexual activity.

Healing Process and Infection Concerns
If you choose to let the area heal on its own, it is crucial to monitor for signs of infection. Symptoms of infection may include increased redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or worsening pain. If you are concerned about urine or other contaminants irritating the area, it is advisable to keep the area clean and dry. Wearing loose-fitting underwear can help minimize friction and allow for better airflow.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If the irritation does not improve within a few days, or if you notice any signs of infection, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options. Additionally, if phimosis is causing recurrent issues, discussing potential treatments, including circumcision or other interventions, may be beneficial.

In summary, while minor irritation can often resolve on its own with proper care, it is essential to be vigilant about hygiene and monitor for any signs of infection. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
