Allergic acne and spot fading?
Hello, two weeks ago my allergic acne has cleared up, but there are many brown spots left.
Will they fade on their own? (I took one antihistamine to help the acne heal faster.) What should I do to make them disappear? Wendy

Hello: The best approach is to do nothing and ignore it; it will naturally resolve itself in a few months.
Alternatively, you can spend money on pulsed light therapy, which will expedite the process, and it should resolve in a few weeks.
Wishing you the best.

Hello Wendy,
It's great to hear that your allergy-related acne has cleared up, but I understand your concern about the lingering brown spots. These marks, often referred to as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), can be frustrating, but there are several effective strategies to help fade them over time.
1. Understanding PIH: After an inflammatory skin condition like acne, the skin can produce excess melanin, leading to dark spots. These spots can take weeks to months to fade on their own, depending on various factors such as skin type, the severity of the inflammation, and your overall skin care routine.
2. Sun Protection: One of the most crucial steps in preventing further darkening of these spots is to protect your skin from the sun. UV exposure can worsen hyperpigmentation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 daily, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours if you're outdoors.
3. Topical Treatments: There are several topical treatments that can help lighten hyperpigmentation:
- Hydroquinone: This is a skin-lightening agent that can reduce the appearance of dark spots. It's available over-the-counter in lower concentrations or by prescription in higher concentrations.
- Retinoids: Products containing retinoids (like tretinoin) can promote cell turnover, helping to fade dark spots and improve skin texture. They can be irritating, so it's best to start slowly.
- Vitamin C: This antioxidant can brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots. Look for serums with stable forms of Vitamin C.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Ingredients like glycolic acid can help exfoliate the skin and promote the fading of dark spots.
- Niacinamide: This ingredient can help reduce pigmentation and improve skin barrier function.
4. Professional Treatments: If at-home treatments are not yielding the desired results, consider consulting a dermatologist for professional options:
- Chemical Peels: These can help exfoliate the top layers of skin, promoting the fading of dark spots.
- Laser Therapy: Certain laser treatments can target pigmentation and help reduce the appearance of dark spots.
- Microneedling: This treatment can stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture and tone.
5. Patience and Consistency: It's important to remember that fading post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation takes time. Consistency with your skincare routine and sun protection is key. You may start to see improvements in a few weeks, but full results can take several months.
6. Avoid Picking: If you have any active acne or irritation, avoid picking at it, as this can lead to further inflammation and more hyperpigmentation.
7. Diet and Hydration: Maintaining a healthy diet rich in antioxidants (fruits and vegetables) and staying hydrated can support skin health from the inside out.
In conclusion, while the brown spots may fade on their own over time, incorporating the above strategies can significantly speed up the process. If you have any concerns or if the spots do not improve, I recommend consulting with a dermatologist for personalized advice and treatment options.
Take care, and I hope you see improvement soon!
