Changes in the penis

Hello, Dr.
Hsu.
I would like to ask the following questions:
1.
I have a high sex drive and typically masturbate 1 to 2 times a day.
However, recently my libido remains strong, but during masturbation, the rigidity of my penis is not as firm as before.
I tried taking a quarter dose of Viagra, and my rigidity returned to normal, but I often experience only partial erections that are not very firm.
My lifestyle, diet, and routine have remained unchanged.
I have also tried abstaining from masturbation, but the firmness does not improve.
What could be causing these symptoms?
2.
With a high sex drive and multiple instances of masturbation and ejaculation daily, could this affect my sexual function?
3.
I have noticed that in its normal state, when I touch the glans, it is less sensitive than before.
The glans also appears less smooth and has darkened in color.
Is this a sign of keratinization of the glans? Could the color change be due to prolonged friction from masturbation?
Thank you.

What to do: Hello, 1.
Insufficient hardness requires further examination to determine the cause.
It is recommended to seek medical attention.
2.
No impact.
3.
If the glans is frequently stimulated, it may become less sensitive.
Regarding whether there is keratinization, a medical examination is necessary.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.
This message is from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of the Urology Department, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Understanding changes in penis sensitivity and erection quality can be a complex issue, often influenced by various physical, psychological, and lifestyle factors. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a decrease in erection hardness and sensitivity, despite having a strong sexual desire. Let's address your concerns one by one.

1. Erection Quality: The fact that you notice a difference in erection hardness, especially when you mention that Viagra (sildenafil) helps restore it, suggests that there may be a physiological component to your issue. Erection quality can be affected by several factors, including blood flow, nerve function, and psychological state. Stress, anxiety, or even fatigue can impact your ability to achieve a firm erection. Additionally, frequent masturbation can lead to temporary changes in sensitivity and erection quality, as the body may adapt to the stimulation patterns you have established.

2. Impact of Frequent Masturbation: Engaging in daily masturbation, especially multiple times a day, can have varying effects on sexual function. For some individuals, it may lead to temporary desensitization, where the penis becomes less responsive to stimulation due to overexposure. This can result in a perceived decrease in sensitivity and erection quality. However, masturbation itself is a normal sexual activity and, for most people, does not cause long-term harm to sexual function. It is essential to listen to your body; if you feel that your sexual health is being affected, consider moderating the frequency of masturbation.

3. Changes in Sensitivity and Appearance: The changes you describe regarding the sensitivity of the glans (the head of the penis) and the color change could indeed be related to a process known as keratinization. Frequent friction and stimulation can lead to a thickening of the skin, which may reduce sensitivity. The darker coloration could be a result of increased blood flow or pigmentation changes due to friction. While some degree of keratinization is normal, if you notice significant changes in texture or color, or if you experience discomfort, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing could be attributed to a combination of physiological and behavioral factors. It is essential to maintain a balanced approach to sexual activity and be mindful of how your body responds. If these changes persist or worsen, or if you have concerns about your sexual health, seeking advice from a healthcare provider, such as a urologist or a sexual health specialist, would be beneficial. They can provide personalized guidance and rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms. Remember, open communication with a healthcare professional is crucial for addressing sexual health concerns effectively.
