Lower abdomen

Dear Dr.
Chang,
I have the following questions: I have been experiencing a feeling of fullness in my lower abdomen for some time now.
I didn't pay much attention to it until recently when I started to feel a frequent urge to urinate.
However, I do pass urine each time, and it is usually more than 30cc.
I personally suspect that it could be: 1.
bladder inflammation 2.
urethral inflammation 3.
prostate-related issues 4.
kidney problems.
Additionally, I would like to know how to maintain good health in this regard.

Thank you for your guidance.
Sincerely,
Chenxi

Dr. Zhang Yanhong reply Family Medicine

Hello, Chenxi: Regarding your question, it is indeed possible that the factors you mentioned could be contributing causes.
I recommend visiting a hospital to consult with a family medicine or urology specialist for further examination to identify the underlying issue.
Additionally, for men's urinary health, the key guidelines are to drink plenty of water, avoid holding urine, have regular urine tests, and consume more acidic foods (such as cranberry juice).
These are the most important tips for maintaining urinary health! Dr.
Zhang Yanhong from Changhua Hospital, Department of Family Medicine, cares about your health.

More Info

Dear Chen Xi,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding your lower abdominal discomfort and associated urinary symptoms. It’s important to address these concerns as they can significantly impact your quality of life. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for your symptoms, and I will outline them along with some care tips.

Possible Causes
1. Bladder Inflammation (Cystitis): This is a common condition, especially in women, and can cause a feeling of urgency to urinate, discomfort in the lower abdomen, and frequent urination with little output. It can be caused by infections, irritants, or even certain medications.

2. Urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra can lead to similar symptoms as cystitis, including a burning sensation during urination and increased urinary frequency. This condition can be caused by infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or irritants.

3. Prostate Issues: In men, prostate enlargement or prostatitis can lead to urinary symptoms such as increased frequency, urgency, and discomfort in the lower abdomen. While you did not specify your gender, it’s important to consider this if applicable.

4. Kidney Problems: Conditions such as kidney stones or infections can cause referred pain to the lower abdomen and urinary symptoms. If there is any obstruction or infection, it can lead to significant discomfort.

5. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, or even diverticulitis can manifest as lower abdominal discomfort and bloating.

Care Tips
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids, particularly water. This helps dilute the urine and can alleviate some symptoms of bladder irritation.

2. Dietary Adjustments: Consider a diet rich in fiber to help with any gastrointestinal issues. Avoid irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods, which can exacerbate bladder symptoms.

3. Regular Urination: Don’t hold in urine for extended periods. Regularly emptying your bladder can help reduce irritation.

4. Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress to your lower abdomen may provide relief from discomfort and cramping.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the duration and nature of your symptoms, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend urine tests, imaging studies, or even a cystoscopy to assess the bladder and urethra directly.

6. Medication: If an infection is diagnosed, antibiotics may be necessary. For inflammation, your doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory medications.

7. Pelvic Floor Exercises: If appropriate, pelvic floor exercises can help strengthen the muscles around the bladder and may alleviate some symptoms.

When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience severe pain, blood in your urine, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly. These could indicate a more serious condition that requires immediate intervention.

In conclusion, while your symptoms could be attributed to several conditions, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Please take care of yourself, and I hope you find relief soon.

Best regards,
Dr. Zhang
