Septoplasty
Hello Doctor, I just had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery a few days ago, and I would like to ask you a few questions:
1.
During the surgery, I heard the doctor mention using a spiral knife, and then there was a liquid spraying continuously.
The doctor said it was due to a machine leak.
Is that normal? Does that liquid coming into my mouth have any implications for my body?
2.
After the surgery, I have been snoring very loudly while sleeping, and it sounds a bit like whistling.
Why is this happening? Will it resolve on its own in a few days?
3.
After the surgery, will I need to have the stitches removed? Thank you!

Hello, 1.
I'm not very familiar with the instruments used by your physician, but I believe it should be saline solution, which should not be a concern.
2.
Each physician may have different surgical techniques, so I recommend you consult your attending physician.

More Info
After undergoing a septoplasty, it is common for patients to have questions and concerns regarding their recovery and the surgical process. Let’s address your queries one by one.
1. Regarding the use of a spiral knife and the liquid that was sprayed during surgery: It is not uncommon for surgical instruments to produce fluids during a procedure. The liquid you mentioned, which the doctor referred to as "machine leakage," is likely a sterile saline solution used to keep the surgical area moist and to help with visibility during the operation. This is a standard practice in many surgical procedures, including septoplasty. If the liquid sprayed onto your mouth or body, it is generally harmless as it is sterile. However, if you have any concerns about contamination or infection, it’s best to discuss this with your surgeon during your follow-up appointment.
2. Concerning the loud snoring and whistling sound while sleeping: Post-operative snoring or unusual sounds during sleep can occur for several reasons. After septoplasty, the nasal passages may be swollen, and the airways can be temporarily obstructed, leading to snoring. Additionally, if you are breathing through your mouth due to nasal congestion, this can also contribute to snoring. This condition is usually temporary and should improve as the swelling decreases and your nasal passages heal. It is important to maintain good nasal hygiene and follow any post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon to facilitate healing. If the snoring persists beyond a few weeks or worsens, it would be advisable to consult your doctor.
3. Regarding the need for suture removal: Many septoplasty procedures utilize absorbable sutures, which do not require removal. These sutures dissolve on their own as the tissue heals. However, if non-absorbable sutures were used, they would need to be removed during a follow-up visit, typically within one to two weeks post-surgery. Your surgeon will inform you about the type of sutures used during your procedure and whether you will need a follow-up appointment for removal.
Additional Considerations for Recovery
- Swelling and Discomfort: It is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort after septoplasty. This can affect your breathing and may contribute to snoring. Using saline nasal sprays or rinses can help keep your nasal passages moist and reduce congestion.
- Follow-Up Appointments: It’s crucial to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. These visits allow your doctor to monitor your healing process, address any concerns, and provide guidance on managing symptoms.
- Managing Anxiety: It’s understandable to feel anxious after surgery, especially with concerns about recovery. Keeping an open line of communication with your healthcare provider can help alleviate worries. Consider writing down any questions or concerns you have before your appointments to ensure you address everything during your visit.
- Sleep Position: Elevating your head while sleeping can help reduce swelling and improve breathing. Try to sleep on your back with your head elevated on pillows.
- Avoiding Strain: Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or activities that could increase blood flow to the head for at least a couple of weeks post-surgery to minimize the risk of bleeding and swelling.
In conclusion, while some discomfort and unusual symptoms can be expected after septoplasty, it is essential to monitor your recovery and communicate with your healthcare provider about any persistent or concerning issues. Following post-operative care instructions and attending follow-up appointments will significantly aid in your recovery process.
