Help me grow taller?

I am 18 years old and 170 cm tall, but many of my classmates are almost 180 cm.
I am unsure if it's still possible for me to grow taller.
During middle school, my main physical activity was cycling, while everyone else was playing basketball and growing taller.
I would like to know if this choice of activity has affected my height.
Although I have already passed puberty, I still hope you can provide me with some methods to increase my height.
Thank you.

Mu Gao Feng, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2001/08/15

Dr. Shi Qiming reply Orthopedics

Dr.
Yeh Min-Nan from Orthopedics replies to Mr.
Mu: Hello, males typically experience skeletal growth until around the age of 17.
Once the growth plates have fused, further height increase is not possible.
Height is determined by genetic and environmental factors.
When skeletal growth has ceased, exercise will not increase height, but it can strengthen the bones and muscles.
I apologize! I do not currently have a correct and feasible method for increasing height; if I did, I would also like to try it!

More Info

At 18 years old, the potential for further height increase is generally limited, but there are still some factors to consider. Most individuals experience their peak growth during puberty, which for females typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 14, and for males between 12 and 16. By the age of 18, many individuals have already reached their maximum height, as the growth plates in the long bones begin to close. However, there are exceptions, and some individuals may continue to grow slightly into their late teens.

To address your concerns and provide you with some actionable tips, let’s explore the factors that can influence height growth, even at your current age.

1. Nutrition: A well-balanced diet is crucial for overall health and can support any remaining growth potential. Ensure you are consuming adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. Foods rich in calcium (like dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods) and protein (such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes) are particularly important. Drinking milk, as you mentioned, can be beneficial, and two cups a day (approximately 480 cc) is a good target.

2. Exercise: While cycling is a great cardiovascular exercise, incorporating activities that promote stretching and flexibility can be beneficial. Sports like basketball, swimming, and yoga can help improve posture and may contribute to a more elongated appearance. Engaging in regular physical activity can also stimulate the release of growth hormones, which are essential for growth.

3. Sleep: Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so ensuring you get enough quality sleep is vital. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to support your body’s natural growth processes.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can make a significant difference in how tall you appear. Standing up straight with your shoulders back can help you maximize your height potential and project confidence.

5. Genetics: It’s important to recognize that genetics play a significant role in determining height. While you can optimize your growth potential through nutrition and exercise, your genetic background will ultimately set a limit on how tall you can grow.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have concerns about your growth or overall health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can assess your growth plates through X-rays and provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.

In summary, while the likelihood of significant height increase at 18 is low, focusing on a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and good posture can help you make the most of your remaining growth potential. Remember that height is just one aspect of who you are, and embracing your unique qualities is equally important. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
