Frenulum tear of the foreskin
Hello, doctor.
About a few weeks ago, I discovered a wound on my frenulum.
After a few days, it healed, but when I had intercourse with my girlfriend, it reopened.
After resting for about a week, I felt it had healed, but it reopened again with movement.
I went to see a doctor who prescribed Meikang ointment to apply daily.
I would like to ask, how long will it take for this type of wound to completely heal and for normal function to return? Thank you very much.
A Jun, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/10/01
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
A-Jun: Hello, it generally takes about 4-6 weeks to heal.
If there are frequent lacerations, you can go to the hospital for a repair surgery to resolve the issue once and for all.

Frenulum tears, particularly in the context of the penile frenulum, can be a source of discomfort and concern for many individuals. The frenulum is a sensitive band of tissue located on the underside of the penis, connecting the glans (tip) to the shaft. Tears in this area can occur due to various reasons, including friction during sexual activity, excessive stretching, or even as a result of certain medical conditions.
Healing Time:
The healing time for a frenulum tear can vary significantly based on the severity of the tear and the individual's overall health. Generally, minor tears may heal within a few days to a week, while more significant tears could take two to three weeks or longer to heal completely. During the healing process, it is crucial to avoid activities that could exacerbate the injury, such as sexual intercourse or vigorous physical activity, until the area has fully healed.
Care Tips:
1. Maintain Hygiene: Keeping the area clean is essential to prevent infection. Gently wash the area with mild soap and water, and pat it dry. Avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals that could irritate the skin.
2. Topical Treatments: As prescribed by your doctor, applying a topical ointment like Meizitang (美康軟膏) can help promote healing and reduce discomfort. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding the frequency and amount to apply.
3. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to minimize friction against the area. Avoid activities that could cause further irritation, including sexual activity, until you are sure the tear has healed.
4. Pain Management: If you experience pain or discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage symptoms. However, consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication.
5. Monitor for Infection: Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, discharge, or fever. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
6. Gradual Return to Activity: Once the area has healed, gradually reintroduce sexual activity. Start slowly and pay attention to any discomfort. If pain recurs, it may be wise to take a step back and allow more time for healing.
7. Consult a Specialist: If you find that the tear keeps reopening or if you have recurrent issues, it may be beneficial to consult a urologist. They can assess the situation and provide further recommendations, which may include surgical options if necessary.
In conclusion, while minor frenulum tears can heal relatively quickly, it is essential to take proper care of the area and allow adequate time for healing. If you have concerns about the healing process or if the injury persists, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any issues early can prevent complications down the line.
