Concerns about height?
Hello, doctor.
I will turn nineteen next month, but I am really worried lately because my height is only 173 cm.
My younger brother, who is now in high school, was already 180 cm in the ninth grade.
He is so tall that he intentionally stays up late to avoid growing taller after entering high school.
My younger sister is in the ninth grade, but she was already 168 cm in the eighth grade.
As you can see, all the children in our family have good genes and are quite tall.
However, I have hardly grown since the first year of high school; I was 172 cm then, and now in my first year of college, I am still only 173 cm.
I am really worried because my brother is so tall, and I feel so short.
The more I think about it, the more anxious I become.
I have some questions.
I was working out during my first year of high school, but it was for less than half a year.
I feel so frustrated that no one told me that building muscle could affect my height.
The trainer at the gym must have been really greedy for money.
Also, someone told me that practicing taekwondo and stretching could also stunt growth.
Is that true? Additionally, does depression suppress the secretion of growth hormone?
When I studied abroad in Canada for a year during my second year of high school, I hardly grew taller during that time.
Could it be because my biological clock is still aligned with Asia, and the timing of growth hormone secretion in Canada coincided with daytime? I used to be very thin, with a BMI below normal.
Could my malnutrition be the reason I can't grow as tall as my siblings? My siblings were quite chubby when they were younger.
Now, I try to go to bed by 9 PM, drink milk every day, and play basketball.
I am willing to do anything to grow taller because I am really worried.
Please, doctor, can you give me any positive suggestions that could help me grow taller? Also, could you point out any possible factors that might be preventing my growth? Thank you.
And please don’t tell me things like "developing inner qualities is the most important" or "attitude is what matters," as those are not helpful responses.
If you suggest that I get an X-ray to check my growth plates, I want to say that I am determined not to give up and believe that I will still grow taller.
So even if I get the X-ray, regardless of the results, I will not lose hope.
I once met a 202 cm tall man in his twenties who told me he grew another 2 cm after turning twenty, so I believe that I can grow taller no matter what.

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics
Xiaolin: Height is related to multiple factors, and theoretically, the chances of growing taller after the growth plates close are minimal.
Just because others can, it doesn't mean you necessarily can (the timing of growth plate closure may vary for each individual).

Height concerns are common, especially during adolescence and early adulthood when individuals are still figuring out their growth potential. As you approach your nineteenth birthday and reflect on your height of 173 cm, it's understandable to feel anxious, particularly when comparing yourself to your siblings who have experienced significant growth. Let's explore the factors that influence height and address your concerns.
Factors Influencing Height
1. Genetics: The most significant factor affecting height is genetics. Your height is largely determined by the height of your parents and family members. While you mentioned that your siblings are taller, it's essential to recognize that genetic potential can vary widely among siblings. Each person has a unique genetic makeup that influences their growth trajectory.
2. Nutrition: Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in growth. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins is essential for optimal growth. You mentioned having a low BMI and concerns about nutrition. If your body lacks essential nutrients, it can hinder growth. Ensure you consume enough calories and a variety of foods, including dairy, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, to support your growth.
3. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity can stimulate growth hormone production. Activities like basketball, swimming, and stretching exercises can be beneficial. However, it's a common misconception that weight training stunts growth. While heavy lifting at a young age can lead to injuries, moderate strength training can be safe and beneficial when done correctly.
4. Sleep: Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep. Ensuring you get adequate sleep is vital for growth. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. You mentioned trying to sleep earlier, which is a positive step. Consistency in your sleep schedule can help regulate your body's internal clock.
5. Hormonal Factors: Hormonal imbalances, including those related to stress and mental health, can impact growth. Conditions like depression can affect appetite and sleep, potentially leading to inadequate nutrition and rest. If you suspect that mental health issues are affecting your growth, consider seeking support from a mental health professional.
Addressing Your Concerns
- Growth Plate Closure: By the age of 19, many individuals have experienced significant growth, but growth plates may still be open. However, it's essential to understand that growth potential diminishes as one approaches adulthood. While some individuals may experience slight increases in height into their early twenties, this is not the norm for everyone.
- Exercise and Height: Engaging in sports like basketball and practicing flexibility through activities like martial arts can promote good posture and overall fitness, which may enhance your appearance. However, they won't necessarily lead to significant increases in height if your growth plates are closing.
- Mental Health: If you're feeling overwhelmed by your height concerns, consider talking to a counselor or therapist. They can help you develop coping strategies and improve your self-esteem, which is crucial for your overall well-being.
- Realistic Expectations: While it's great to have hope and determination, it's also essential to set realistic expectations. Focus on what you can control, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, rather than solely fixating on height.
In conclusion, while there are various factors influencing height, it's important to remember that everyone grows at their own pace. Embrace your unique qualities and focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you have ongoing concerns about your growth or health, consider consulting with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and support.
