Can masturbation cause constipation?

Hello, Dr.
Hsu.
Two months ago, after masturbating, I felt a tightening of the anal muscles.
Initially, I didn't think much of it, but a few days later, I realized I had no urge to defecate, which made me very anxious.
I wondered if I had developed hemorrhoids or a tumor.
I consulted a gastroenterologist and took some stool softeners, but they didn't seem very effective.
Although I was able to pass some stool, I still had no urge to go.
Later, I also visited a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and took some herbal remedies, but the results were similar and not very helpful.
Subsequently, I underwent a colonoscopy, and the doctor diagnosed me with functional constipation.
I researched online and found that functional constipation is related to autonomic nervous system dysregulation.
I then sought treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner focusing on this aspect, but again, there was little effect.

Afterward, I went to X General Hospital in Taipei because I heard they offer functional magnetic stimulation therapy, which seems to be targeted at patients with functional constipation.
Unfortunately, this treatment is only available during the day, and I cannot take time off work every day to undergo this therapy (the doctor mentioned that it needs to be done at least three to four times a week to be effective).
Before visiting X General Hospital, I also went to National X Hospital in Taipei to see a urologist.
I told the doctor that my constipation was caused by masturbation, but he didn't believe me and thought it was unlikely.
However, I truly feel that my constipation is related to masturbation, as I have experienced similar situations in the past, though I didn't pay attention to them back then, and they weren't as severe as this time.
Later, I searched for information online and consulted some urologists.
I found relevant information on Dr.
Chen Wei-X's urology clinic blog, where Dr.
Chen stated, "In theory, masturbation does not cause constipation unless there is a psychogenic disorder.
I suggest you consider consulting a gastroenterologist and a psychosomatic specialist." Today, I also saw your response, Dr.
Hsu, stating, "Normal erection and ejaculation involve the coordination and stimulation of the autonomic nervous system, which can also affect gastrointestinal stimulation.
Some people may experience diarrhea, while others may have constipation or even pain due to gastrointestinal stimulation." This further confirms my belief that my constipation is caused by masturbation.
About five years ago, I experienced a significant emotional blow from a breakup, which led to psychosomatic issues and autonomic nervous system dysregulation.
At that time, whenever I felt anxious, I would have diarrhea, which was very smooth.
(Now, it's the complete opposite.) I weighed 53 kg back then, but since developing psychosomatic issues, my weight has decreased to only 44 kg (I am 168 cm tall).
It's not that I eat too little; I just can't gain weight no matter how much I eat.
A week or two ago, I suspected that being underweight might have caused my stomach to sag, directly compressing my intestines.
However, even after seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and taking some herbal remedies, I still have no urge to defecate.
Currently, I feel that it's not that my intestines aren't moving; rather, I don't even have the sensation of needing to have a bowel movement.
Unless I go without a bowel movement for more than three days, I only feel the urge to go when my stomach is in severe pain.
Sometimes, even when stool is at the anus, I still have no urge to go, and when I try to push, only a little comes out.
What should I do now? Should I see a psychiatrist, a gastroenterologist, a urologist, or a neurologist? I'm really confused.
My medical history includes varicocele, autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and psychosomatic issues.
My daily lifestyle and dietary habits include being a vegetarian (flexible vegetarian), going to bed early and waking up early (no habit of staying up late), sitting for long periods, and not exercising often.
I apologize for writing so much, and I hope Dr.
Hsu can help me.
Thank you very much.
If possible, could you recommend a doctor in Taipei or New Taipei City (I live in Tucheng) who is familiar with these symptoms? Thank you.

Erection and ejaculation are primarily regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which also influences intestinal motility.
Individuals who are more sensitive or experience prolonged erections may encounter gastrointestinal discomfort.
Applying a warm compress to the lower abdomen after ejaculation may help alleviate this discomfort.
If you have any further questions or need clarification, feel free to ask for further discussion and research.

Masturbation and its potential effects on bowel function, particularly constipation, is an interesting topic that intertwines physiological, psychological, and neurological aspects. While it is commonly believed that masturbation does not directly cause constipation, the relationship between sexual activity and bowel function can be complex and influenced by various factors.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that masturbation itself is a normal sexual activity that many people engage in. It involves the stimulation of the genitalia, which can lead to sexual arousal and orgasm. This process is regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which also plays a role in gastrointestinal function. The autonomic nervous system has two main branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system is often associated with the "fight or flight" response, while the parasympathetic nervous system is linked to "rest and digest" functions, including bowel movements.

In some individuals, sexual arousal and orgasm can lead to changes in the body that may temporarily affect bowel function. For example, during sexual arousal, the body may divert blood flow away from the gastrointestinal tract, which could potentially slow down digestive processes. Additionally, the release of certain hormones during orgasm may influence gut motility. However, these effects are typically transient and should not lead to chronic constipation.

In your case, the onset of constipation following masturbation could be coincidental or related to other underlying factors. You mentioned experiencing functional constipation, which is often linked to issues such as stress, anxiety, or changes in routine. Given your history of psychosomatic symptoms and autonomic nervous system dysregulation, it is plausible that psychological factors are contributing to your bowel issues. Stress and anxiety can lead to changes in gut motility, resulting in either diarrhea or constipation, depending on the individual.

Your experience of feeling a lack of urge to defecate, even after several days, suggests that there may be a significant psychological component at play. The mind-gut connection is well-documented, and conditions such as anxiety and depression can profoundly impact gastrointestinal function. It’s also worth noting that your history of significant weight loss and changes in appetite may further complicate your gastrointestinal health.

Given the multifaceted nature of your symptoms, it would be advisable to approach this issue from both a gastrointestinal and psychological perspective. Consulting with a gastroenterologist is essential to rule out any underlying physical conditions that could be contributing to your constipation. However, given your history of anxiety and psychosomatic symptoms, it may also be beneficial to seek help from a mental health professional. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or other therapeutic approaches can be effective in addressing the psychological aspects of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

In terms of treatment, a multidisciplinary approach may be most beneficial. This could include dietary modifications, such as increasing fiber intake and hydration, regular physical activity, and possibly the use of medications to manage constipation. Additionally, addressing any underlying anxiety or stress through therapy could help improve your overall gut function.

If you are looking for specific recommendations for healthcare providers in Taipei or New Taipei City, I would suggest seeking out gastroenterologists who have experience with functional gastrointestinal disorders, as well as mental health professionals who specialize in anxiety and stress management. It may also be helpful to look for clinics that offer integrated care, where both gastrointestinal and psychological health can be addressed concurrently.

In conclusion, while masturbation is unlikely to be the direct cause of your constipation, the interplay of psychological factors and gastrointestinal function is significant. A comprehensive evaluation and a collaborative treatment approach will likely yield the best outcomes for your symptoms.
