Itchy ears and a heavy head?
Hello doctor, my ears have been itching internally every two to three days.
I can't reach the itch, so I press on my ears with my fingers until it feels a bit better, but often this causes some skin irritation.
When I shower and wash my face, the tapping sensation feels good and relieves the itch, but I'm concerned about the potential harm to my ears, so I hesitate to do it.
However, relieving the itch feels much better.
This happens about every three to four days.
How can I resolve this issue?
Additionally, last week while sitting at my computer, I suddenly experienced tinnitus for a few seconds, which then disappeared.
That night, I had trouble sleeping; I went to bed around 11 PM but woke up around 3 AM with tinnitus again and couldn't sleep well until morning.
My ring finger has also been experiencing unexplained tingling, which has persisted until tonight.
I often feel a heaviness in my head and am quite fatigued.
What could be causing this? Recently, I've also had other symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, and fatigue, and I'm not sure how they are all connected.
My whole body feels quite uncomfortable.

Dr. Hu Kexin reply Otolaryngology
Hello: There are many causes for itchy ears, such as fungal infections, bacterial infections, or dry ear canals.
Gently pressing on the ear with your finger may provide some comfort, but doing it too often or too forcefully can lead to injury, which would be counterproductive.
It is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist for a thorough examination and treatment.
Whether your tinnitus is caused by external ear inflammation also needs to be confirmed by an otolaryngologist.

More Info
Understanding ear itching and head pressure can be quite complex, as these symptoms may stem from various underlying conditions. Based on the symptoms you've described, it seems that you may be experiencing a combination of ear-related issues and possibly some neurological or systemic concerns.
Ear Itching and Pressure
The itching sensation in your ears, particularly if it's internal and difficult to reach, could be due to several factors. Common causes of ear itching include:
1. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to dust, pollen, or certain foods can lead to itching in the ears. This is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nasal congestion or sneezing.
2. Eczema or Dermatitis: Skin conditions can affect the ear canal, leading to dryness and itching. This is particularly common if you have a history of skin issues.
3. Earwax Buildup: While you may not feel that you have excessive earwax, even a small amount can cause irritation and itching. It's important to avoid inserting objects into the ear canal, as this can lead to injury or infection.
4. Infections: Both external ear infections (otitis externa) and middle ear infections (otitis media) can cause itching, discomfort, and pressure in the ear. If you notice any discharge or worsening symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.
Head Pressure and Other Symptoms
The sensation of head pressure, along with ear ringing (tinnitus), can be indicative of several conditions:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: This occurs when the tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat becomes blocked or fails to open properly. This can lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear and head.
2. Sinus Issues: Sinus infections or allergies can cause pressure in the head and ears, often accompanied by headaches and discomfort.
3. Migraines: Some individuals experience auras or symptoms like tinnitus and head pressure during migraine episodes. If you have a history of migraines, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Neurological Concerns: The combination of ear symptoms, head pressure, and sensations like tingling in your fingers could suggest a neurological issue. Conditions such as anxiety or stress can also manifest physically, leading to symptoms like insomnia and fatigue.
Recommendations
Given the complexity of your symptoms, here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult an ENT Specialist: Since you are experiencing ear itching and pressure, an evaluation by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist is crucial. They can perform a thorough examination, including checking for infections, blockages, or other abnormalities.
2. Manage Allergies: If allergies are suspected, consider using antihistamines or nasal sprays as recommended by a healthcare provider.
3. Avoid Irritants: Try to avoid inserting objects into your ears, as this can exacerbate itching and lead to injury. Instead, consider using a gentle ear-cleaning solution if necessary.
4. Monitor Head Symptoms: Keep track of your head pressure and any associated symptoms. If these persist or worsen, seek medical attention to rule out more serious conditions.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Addressing lifestyle factors such as stress management, sleep hygiene, and diet can also help alleviate symptoms. Consider relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and a balanced diet to improve overall well-being.
6. Follow-Up on Neurological Symptoms: If the tingling in your fingers and persistent fatigue continue, it may be beneficial to consult a neurologist to explore these symptoms further.
In conclusion, while ear itching and head pressure can be bothersome, understanding the potential causes and seeking appropriate medical advice can lead to effective management and relief. Remember, it's essential to listen to your body and seek help when symptoms persist or interfere with your daily life.
