Dear Wade,
Hello, it may be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction.
The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx and opens during swallowing to equalize pressure in the middle ear.
Dysfunction of this tube may lead to abnormal sounds.
Most cases tend to improve naturally.
Medications for treating nasal allergies or nasal congestion may be helpful.
Additionally, chewing gum may assist in restoring its function.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
When you experience sounds in your ears while swallowing, it can be quite concerning and may indicate a few underlying conditions. The phenomenon you’re describing is often related to the function of the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. This tube helps to equalize pressure in the ear and drain fluid. When you swallow, the muscles around the Eustachian tube contract, allowing air to flow into the middle ear and equalizing pressure. If there is any dysfunction in this process, it can lead to sounds or sensations in the ear.
Possible Causes
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD): This is one of the most common reasons for experiencing sounds in the ears while swallowing. ETD can occur due to allergies, colds, sinus infections, or changes in altitude. When the Eustachian tube does not open properly, it can create a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear, and you may hear sounds as the pressure changes.
2. Middle Ear Issues: Conditions such as fluid accumulation in the middle ear (otitis media) can also cause sounds during swallowing. This fluid can interfere with the normal movement of the eardrum and ossicles, leading to unusual auditory sensations.
3. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: The TMJ is located near the ear, and issues with this joint can cause sounds in the ear, especially when moving the jaw, which includes swallowing. Symptoms may include pain in the jaw, clicking sounds, or discomfort when chewing.
4. Acoustic Reflex: The muscles in the middle ear contract in response to loud sounds to protect the inner ear. This reflex can sometimes be triggered by swallowing, leading to sounds in the ear.
5. Tinnitus: While tinnitus is often described as ringing in the ears, it can manifest in various ways, including sounds that seem to be related to swallowing. If you have a history of hearing loss or exposure to loud noises, this could be a contributing factor.
Treatment Options
1. Medical Evaluation: It’s essential to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for a thorough examination. They may perform a physical examination, hearing tests, and possibly imaging studies to determine the underlying cause.
2. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Management: If ETD is diagnosed, treatments may include nasal decongestants, antihistamines, or nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and promote Eustachian tube function. In some cases, a procedure called balloon Eustachian tuboplasty may be recommended.
3. TMJ Treatment: If TMJ disorder is suspected, treatments may include physical therapy, dental splints, or medications to relieve pain and inflammation.
4. Hearing Aids or Tinnitus Management: If hearing loss or tinnitus is contributing to your symptoms, hearing aids or tinnitus retraining therapy may be beneficial.
5. Home Remedies: In some cases, simple measures such as swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum can help equalize ear pressure and alleviate symptoms. Staying hydrated and using a humidifier can also be helpful, especially during allergy seasons or when experiencing a cold.
Conclusion
Experiencing sounds in your ears while swallowing can be linked to various conditions, primarily involving the Eustachian tube or the middle ear. It’s crucial to seek medical advice to identify the specific cause and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and relief from symptoms. If you have persistent or worsening symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
