Pre-Marital Health Check: Results and Risks - Family Medicine

Pre-marital health checkup

I have two questions regarding the results of a pre-marital health check report, thank you!
1.
Varicella antibody: 1315, does this indicate a negative result? If pregnant, what risks would this pose? What precautions should be taken?
2.
Toxoplasma: 0.2, does this indicate a normal result? Since I have three cats at home, if my test is normal, does this mean I am less likely to experience a miscarriage due to toxoplasmosis during pregnancy? I am currently preparing for pregnancy...
(If my result is normal, does this mean my cats do not have toxoplasmosis?)
I appreciate your response, thanks!

joyce, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/01/12

Hello, regarding your questions:
1.
For varicella antibody testing, the results should be interpreted based on the reference ranges provided by the respective laboratory.
If a pregnant woman is infected with the varicella virus, it can affect the fetus; having antibodies certainly provides an additional layer of protection.
If antibodies are absent, vaccination is recommended, but contraception must be practiced.
2.
Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease, and the antibody response may indicate either an acute infection or previous exposure, depending on the type of antibody test conducted.
Based on the data you provided, it may not be possible to make a detailed assessment.
Have you consulted your physician regarding your test results? It is advisable to discuss any tests thoroughly with your doctor before and after they are conducted; otherwise, it would be unfortunate to undergo numerous tests without understanding their appropriateness or significance.
Thank you for your inquiry, and we at Changhua Hospital care about your well-being.

Pre-marital health checks are essential for couples planning to start a family, especially when considering factors like age and potential health risks. Your questions about the results of your pre-marital health check are very important, particularly regarding your varicella (chickenpox) immunity and toxoplasmosis status, especially since you have pets at home.

1. Varicella Antibody Result: A result of 1315 for varicella antibodies typically indicates that you are immune to chickenpox. In most laboratory settings, a positive result for varicella antibodies means that you have either had the chickenpox disease in the past or have been vaccinated against it. If your result were negative, it would mean you are susceptible to the virus, which could pose risks during pregnancy, such as congenital varicella syndrome, which can lead to serious birth defects. Since your result indicates immunity, you should not be at risk for complications related to chickenpox during pregnancy. However, if you are unsure about the interpretation of your results, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for clarification and personalized advice.

2. Toxoplasmosis Result: A result of 0.2 for toxoplasmosis typically indicates that you are negative for the infection, which is a good sign. Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite that can be transmitted through cat feces, undercooked meat, and contaminated soil or water. If you are negative for toxoplasmosis, it suggests that you have not been exposed to the parasite, which reduces the risk of complications during pregnancy, such as miscarriage or congenital infection. However, it is important to maintain good hygiene practices, especially when handling your cats. Ensure that someone else cleans the litter box, or if you must do it yourself, wear gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Additionally, avoid feeding your cats raw meat and ensure they are kept indoors to minimize their exposure to the parasite.

Regarding your concern about your cats, a negative result for you does not necessarily mean that your cats are free from toxoplasmosis. Cats can carry the parasite without showing any signs of illness. It is advisable to have your pets checked by a veterinarian if you have concerns about their health or potential exposure to toxoplasmosis.

In summary, your varicella antibody result indicates immunity, which is reassuring for your pregnancy plans. Your toxoplasmosis result suggests that you are not currently infected, but it is essential to continue practicing good hygiene around your pets. If you have any further questions or concerns, especially as you prepare for pregnancy, consider discussing them with your healthcare provider, who can offer tailored advice based on your health history and circumstances.
