There is a feeling of slight discomfort and fullness in the upper left abdomen?
I have recently been experiencing a feeling of heaviness and bloating in the upper left area of my abdomen, just below the rib cage, about three fingers' width from my navel and slightly to the left.
It doesn't hurt, but the sensation becomes more noticeable after eating a full meal, and sometimes it feels better after using the restroom.
My bowel movements vary in thickness; sometimes they are thick, sometimes thin, but they are generally well-formed.
However, I have noticed some black particles that appear somewhat dark green when I pick them up with toilet paper.
Is this normal? Thank you in advance for your response, doctor!

Hello: Discomfort in the upper left abdomen may be related to gastric issues, often accompanied by symptoms such as belching and acid reflux.
It could also be related to intestinal problems, typically associated with bloating and irregular bowel movements.
If necessary, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist.
Wishing you good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding discomfort in the left upper abdomen can be quite complex, as it may stem from various underlying causes. Based on your description, the discomfort you are experiencing is located just below the rib cage, to the left of your belly button, and is characterized by a feeling of heaviness or pressure rather than acute pain. This sensation tends to become more pronounced after eating and may improve after a bowel movement. Additionally, you mentioned noticing black or dark green particles in your stool, which can be concerning.
The left upper abdomen houses several important organs, including the stomach, spleen, pancreas, and parts of the colon. Therefore, discomfort in this area can be attributed to issues related to any of these organs. Here are some potential causes of your symptoms:
1. Gastric Issues: Given that you feel more discomfort after eating, it is possible that you are experiencing gastritis or even symptoms related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). These conditions can lead to a sensation of fullness or pressure in the upper abdomen.
2. Splenic Concerns: The spleen is located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. If there is any enlargement (splenomegaly) or inflammation, it could cause discomfort. Conditions such as infections, liver disease, or blood disorders can lead to splenic enlargement.
3. Pancreatic Problems: The pancreas, which is also situated in the upper abdomen, can be a source of discomfort if inflamed (pancreatitis) or if there are issues such as pancreatic cancer, although the latter is less common.
4. Colonic Issues: The descending colon runs along the left side of the abdomen. Conditions such as diverticulitis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) could lead to discomfort, especially if associated with changes in bowel habits.
5. Musculoskeletal Issues: Sometimes, discomfort in the abdomen can be related to muscle strain or issues with the rib cage, especially if you have been engaging in activities that involve heavy lifting or unusual physical exertion.
Regarding the presence of black or dark green particles in your stool, this could be indicative of several things. Dark stools can result from the consumption of certain foods (like black licorice or iron supplements), but they can also indicate bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to the presence of digested blood. It is essential to monitor this symptom closely, especially if it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or changes in appetite.
Given the range of potential causes for your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. A physician may recommend diagnostic tests such as blood tests, abdominal ultrasound, or endoscopy to ascertain the underlying cause of your discomfort.
In the meantime, consider keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any associated symptoms, as this information can be valuable for your healthcare provider. Additionally, try to avoid heavy meals, spicy foods, and any known irritants to your digestive system until you have a clearer understanding of your condition.
In summary, while your symptoms may not seem severe at the moment, they warrant further investigation to rule out any serious conditions. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes and alleviate discomfort. Please prioritize seeking medical attention to address your concerns comprehensively.
