Can internal hemorrhoids disappear?
Hello Doctor: Recently, after reviewing my colonoscopy report, I found out that I have internal hemorrhoids.
The doctor informed me that they are neither large nor small.
He advised me not to stand or sit for long periods, to eat more fruits and vegetables, and prescribed medication for constipation.
I can go home now.
My usual diet consists mostly of starches, with less emphasis on vegetables and fruits, and I drink water...
I mostly sit during the day and alternate between standing and sitting at night.
I have a bowel movement at least 1 to 2 times a day! However, on certain days, I experienced blood in my stool, so I went to the hospital for an immediate examination! But I have some concerns.
I would like to ask you if adjusting my dietary habits and changing my sitting posture will make the internal hemorrhoids disappear, or will they still persist? Thank you.

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello: It is quite rare for modern individuals to be free of hemorrhoids, and even after surgical treatment, hemorrhoids may recur.
Generally speaking, hemorrhoids without complications (such as severe bleeding, inflammation, or fistulas) are usually managed primarily with medication and adjustments to lifestyle and dietary habits.
If necessary, one can seek care from a colorectal surgeon.
Best wishes, Dr.

More Info
Internal hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the rectum or anus that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding during bowel movements. They are classified as either internal or external, with internal hemorrhoids being located inside the rectum. Your inquiry about whether dietary and lifestyle changes can lead to the resolution of internal hemorrhoids is a common concern among individuals diagnosed with this condition.
In many cases, mild internal hemorrhoids can indeed improve or even resolve with appropriate lifestyle modifications. Here are some key points to consider regarding dietary and lifestyle changes that may help manage and potentially alleviate the symptoms associated with internal hemorrhoids:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Increasing fiber intake is crucial for promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation, which is a significant contributor to hemorrhoid formation. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes can help soften stool and make it easier to pass. Aim for at least 25-30 grams of fiber per day. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water (at least 8-10 cups daily) is essential, as it helps to keep the stool soft.
2. Regular Bowel Habits: Establishing a routine for bowel movements can be beneficial. Try to set aside time each day to use the bathroom, and avoid straining during bowel movements. If you feel the urge to go, do not delay, as this can lead to constipation.
3. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can improve bowel function and reduce the risk of constipation. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Activities such as walking, swimming, or cycling can be effective.
4. Posture and Sitting Habits: Avoid prolonged sitting or standing, as this can increase pressure on the rectal veins. When sitting on the toilet, consider using a footstool to elevate your feet, which can help facilitate easier bowel movements. Additionally, take breaks to stand and stretch if you have a sedentary job.
5. Avoiding Straining: Straining during bowel movements can exacerbate hemorrhoids. If you experience difficulty passing stool, consider using over-the-counter stool softeners or fiber supplements as recommended by your healthcare provider.
6. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms and any changes you notice after implementing these lifestyle modifications. If bleeding persists or worsens, or if you experience significant pain, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
While these lifestyle changes can significantly improve symptoms and may lead to the reduction of internal hemorrhoids, it is important to note that they may not eliminate the condition entirely, especially if the hemorrhoids are more advanced. In some cases, medical interventions such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or surgical options may be necessary if conservative measures fail to provide relief.
In summary, while dietary and lifestyle changes can play a significant role in managing internal hemorrhoids and may lead to their improvement, it is essential to maintain realistic expectations. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial to monitor your condition and determine if further treatment is needed. If you continue to experience symptoms despite making these changes, do not hesitate to seek medical advice for additional options.
