Nasal pain
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing sudden soreness in the bridge of my nose (about 1 cm from the tip).
It hurts when touched.
What could be the reason for this? I don't have any history of nasal issues, except for slight allergies.
Additionally, the skin on both sides of my nose has been peeling for the past 2-3 years.
What could be the cause of this? Thank you!
Mr. Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/05/15
Dr. Hu Kexin reply Otolaryngology
Hello, the most common reason for pain when touching the bridge of the nose is injury to the internal nasal mucosa.
Other possible causes include folliculitis and trigeminal neuralgia.
Peeling on both sides of the nose is often due to seborrheic dermatitis.
It is recommended to consult not only an otolaryngologist but also a dermatologist for further advice.

More Info
Nasal pain can be a distressing symptom that may arise from various underlying causes. In your case, the sudden pain in the bridge of your nose, particularly around the area just above the tip, could be attributed to several factors. Here, I will outline potential causes and suggest solutions for your discomfort.
Possible Causes of Nasal Pain
1. Sinusitis: Even if you do not have a history of nasal issues, sinusitis can develop due to allergies or infections. Inflammation of the sinuses can lead to pressure and pain in the nasal area, including the bridge of the nose.
2. Allergic Rhinitis: Given your mention of slight allergies, it is possible that allergic rhinitis could be causing inflammation in the nasal passages, leading to discomfort. Allergens can cause the nasal mucosa to swell, which may result in pain when pressure is applied.
3. Nasal Trauma: If you have recently bumped your nose or experienced any trauma, even minor, it could lead to localized pain. This could be due to soft tissue injury or even a fracture that might not be immediately apparent.
4. Nasal Dermatitis: The peeling skin on the sides of your nose could indicate a form of dermatitis, which can be caused by irritants, allergens, or even dry skin. This condition may lead to localized pain and discomfort.
5. Nasal Polyps: While less common, nasal polyps can develop in individuals with chronic inflammation or allergies. These growths can cause discomfort and may lead to sinus blockage.
6. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can also cause pain in the nasal area. Conditions like the common cold or flu can lead to inflammation and pain in the nasal passages.
Suggested Solutions
1. Consult an ENT Specialist: Given the persistence of your symptoms, it would be prudent to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including nasal endoscopy if necessary, to determine the exact cause of your pain.
2. Saline Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline solution to rinse your nasal passages can help reduce inflammation and clear out allergens or irritants. This is a simple and effective home remedy.
3. Topical Treatments: If your nasal pain is related to dermatitis, consider using a gentle moisturizer or hydrocortisone cream on the affected areas. However, avoid applying anything directly inside the nose unless advised by a healthcare professional.
4. Allergy Management: If allergies are contributing to your symptoms, over-the-counter antihistamines may help alleviate nasal discomfort. Identifying and avoiding triggers is also essential.
5. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
6. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other environmental irritants that could exacerbate your symptoms.
7. Hydration and Humidification: Keeping yourself well-hydrated and using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in your nasal passages, which may alleviate discomfort.
Conclusion
In summary, nasal pain can arise from various causes, including sinusitis, allergic reactions, trauma, or dermatitis. Given your symptoms, it is essential to seek professional medical advice for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Meanwhile, implementing some of the suggested home remedies may provide temporary relief. Always prioritize your health and consult a healthcare provider if your symptoms persist or worsen.
