Nasal pain

Hello, doctor...
I have pain when I press on the inside of my right nostril.
Recently, I've been experiencing slight nasal congestion in both nostrils before going to sleep, but it resolves after I fall asleep and upon waking up.
I also tend to sneeze easily.
Previously, I had similar pain on the same side of my nose, but later discovered it was due to a pimple that formed on the inside, which resolved after I squeezed it.
Could this pain in my nose be due to the same reason? What could these symptoms indicate? Is it something I can ignore?

wiewie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/08/08

Dr. Chen Junliang reply Otolaryngology

Hello Miss Wiewie: If there is skin inflammation or acne, it may cause the aforementioned symptoms.
However, chronic sinusitis and chronic rhinitis can also present with similar symptoms, and a physical examination along with radiological tests is necessary for differential diagnosis.

When it comes to nasal pain, particularly when accompanied by symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing, or localized tenderness, it is essential to consider various potential causes. Your description of experiencing pain upon pressing the inside of your right nostril, along with intermittent nasal congestion and sneezing, suggests a few possibilities that could be at play.

One common cause of localized nasal pain is the presence of a nasal polyp or a small cyst, which can develop in the nasal passages. These growths can sometimes become inflamed or infected, leading to discomfort. Another possibility is the presence of a pimple or folliculitis, as you mentioned in your previous experience. This occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to bacteria or irritation, and can lead to localized pain and tenderness.

Additionally, sinusitis (inflammation of the sinus cavities) could be a factor, especially if you are experiencing nasal congestion. Sinusitis can be acute or chronic and is often accompanied by symptoms like facial pain, pressure, and sometimes fever. In your case, if the pain is localized and does not present with other systemic symptoms (like fever or significant facial swelling), it may be less likely to be sinusitis.

Allergic rhinitis could also explain your symptoms, particularly if you find yourself sneezing frequently and experiencing nasal congestion. Allergies can lead to inflammation of the nasal mucosa, resulting in discomfort and increased sensitivity in the nasal passages.

Given that you have experienced similar symptoms in the past with a clear resolution after addressing a pimple, it is plausible that your current discomfort could be due to a similar benign issue. However, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as significant swelling, fever, or changes in your sense of smell, it would be wise to seek medical attention.

In terms of when to seek help, consider the following guidelines:
1. Persistent Pain: If the pain lasts more than a few days without improvement, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

2. Worsening Symptoms: If you notice an increase in pain, swelling, or the development of new symptoms, such as fever or drainage of pus, seek medical attention.

3. Recurring Issues: If you frequently experience similar symptoms, it may be beneficial to have a thorough evaluation to rule out underlying conditions.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be benign and related to a minor issue, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for a more comprehensive evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as a CT scan, or refer you to an ENT specialist for further assessment if necessary. Your health and comfort are paramount, and proactive management is key to addressing any potential issues effectively.
