Uneven abdomen?

Hello, doctor.
I am 175 cm tall and weigh 84 kg.
I run at least three times a week, covering about 3 kilometers each time, and I don't feel any discomfort.
However, I recently noticed that my right side of the abdomen is slightly larger than the left, and it's more noticeable when I exert myself.
Why could this be happening?

andy, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/06/03

In fact, our bodies are not completely symmetrical, but we need to rule out any abnormalities within the abdominal cavity.

When it comes to concerns about uneven abdominal distension, particularly when you notice that one side of your abdomen appears larger than the other, it’s important to consider several potential causes. Given your active lifestyle, including regular running, it’s reassuring that you do not experience any discomfort. However, the asymmetry you’ve observed warrants further exploration.

Firstly, it’s essential to understand that the human body is not perfectly symmetrical. Minor differences in size or shape between the left and right sides of the abdomen can be normal. However, significant or noticeable changes can indicate underlying issues. Here are some potential explanations for the right-side distension you are experiencing:
1. Muscle Development: If you engage in physical activities that emphasize one side of your body more than the other, such as certain strength training exercises or sports, it could lead to muscle hypertrophy (growth) on that side. This might create the appearance of unevenness in your abdomen.

2. Fat Distribution: Body fat distribution can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals may naturally store more fat on one side of their abdomen, which could contribute to the asymmetry you are noticing.

3. Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as bloating, gas, or constipation can lead to temporary distension. If you have recently changed your diet or experienced any digestive issues, this could explain the uneven appearance.
4. Hernias: A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. An inguinal hernia, for example, can cause swelling on one side of the abdomen. If you notice a bulge that becomes more pronounced when you cough or strain, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

5. Organ Enlargement: In some cases, the enlargement of organs such as the liver or spleen can cause noticeable distension on one side of the abdomen. This is less common but should be considered, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like pain, jaundice, or changes in appetite.

6. Fluid Accumulation: Conditions that lead to fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity, known as ascites, can also cause asymmetrical distension. This is typically associated with liver disease or other serious conditions.

Given your situation, it would be prudent to monitor the distension closely. If it persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, changes in bowel habits, or weight loss, it would be wise to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and potentially order imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to assess the abdominal organs and structures.

In summary, while minor asymmetries in the abdomen can be normal, significant changes should not be ignored. Your active lifestyle is a positive factor, but it’s essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your body. If you have any concerns or if the condition persists, don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and peace of mind.
