Humeral fracture

After a right humeral fracture and surgery, I have been unable to raise my right arm normally.
An ultrasound was performed and the results were normal.
Therefore, I am seeking Dr.
Yeh's assistance for clarification.
Thank you!

Hello: If the shoulder joint remains immobile for about three weeks, it can lead to joint stiffness.
After surgery, if the arm is kept in a sling without movement, it may result in similar issues.
Currently, the only option is to work hard on rehabilitation at a physical therapy department.
Wishing you peace and happiness.

Recovering from a humerus fracture surgery can be a challenging journey, and it's understandable to feel frustrated when progress seems slow. The humerus, being the long bone of the upper arm, plays a crucial role in shoulder and arm mobility. After surgery, particularly if it involved the insertion of hardware like plates or screws, there are several factors that can affect your recovery.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that the healing process for a bone fracture typically takes several weeks to months. The initial phase of recovery focuses on protecting the surgical site and allowing the bone to heal properly. During this time, it's common to experience stiffness and limited range of motion, especially in the shoulder and elbow joints. This stiffness can be exacerbated by immobilization, which is often necessary post-surgery to ensure the fracture heals correctly.

If you are experiencing difficulty in raising your arm after surgery, it could be due to several reasons:
1. Pain and Discomfort: Post-operative pain can significantly limit your ability to move your arm. Pain management is crucial, and if you're still experiencing significant discomfort, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider to adjust your pain management plan.

2. Muscle Weakness: After a period of immobilization, the muscles around the shoulder and arm may weaken. This weakness can make it difficult to perform movements that require strength, such as lifting your arm. Engaging in physical therapy can help strengthen these muscles gradually.

3. Joint Stiffness: As mentioned earlier, stiffness in the shoulder joint can occur after surgery. This can be due to a combination of pain, muscle guarding, and the natural healing process. Gentle stretching and range-of-motion exercises, as advised by your physical therapist, can help alleviate this stiffness over time.

4. Scar Tissue Formation: After surgery, scar tissue can form around the surgical site, which may restrict movement. Physical therapy can also help in managing scar tissue through specific exercises and modalities.

5. Psychological Factors: Sometimes, the fear of pain or re-injury can lead to guarded movements, which can further limit your range of motion. It's essential to work with your therapist to build confidence in your movements.

In terms of recovery, here are some general guidelines:
- Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-ups with your orthopedic surgeon are crucial to monitor the healing process through physical examinations and imaging studies if necessary.

- Physical Therapy: Engaging in a structured physical therapy program is vital. A physical therapist can provide you with a tailored exercise regimen that focuses on improving your range of motion, strength, and function. They can also employ techniques such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation to aid in recovery.

- Gradual Progression: Recovery is a gradual process. It’s important to set realistic goals and be patient with yourself. Progress may be slow initially, but with consistent effort, improvements will come.

- Home Exercises: In addition to therapy sessions, performing prescribed exercises at home can enhance your recovery. These may include gentle stretching and strengthening exercises.

- Nutrition and Hydration: Adequate nutrition plays a significant role in bone healing. Ensure you are consuming a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and stay hydrated.

In conclusion, while the journey to recovery after a humerus fracture surgery can be fraught with challenges, understanding the factors at play can help you navigate this process more effectively. If you continue to have concerns about your recovery, it’s essential to communicate openly with your healthcare team. They can provide you with the necessary support and adjustments to your rehabilitation plan to ensure you regain full function of your arm. Remember, patience and persistence are key components of a successful recovery.
