Female discharge
Hello doctor, in the past 1 to 2 years, I (female) have noticed that my discharge has a light yellow color and sometimes has a fishy or foul odor, to the point where I can smell it even through my pants.
This makes me quite uncomfortable.
Could this be a bacterial infection, or is it due to not cleaning properly? Or could it be related to masturbation?
Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/07/01
Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
Hello: It is indeed possible that there is an infection, and if masturbation has caused mucosal injury, that could also be a factor.
However, it is still advisable to consult a gynecologist, as they have the necessary instruments to perform examinations and cultures if needed.
I hope this is helpful to you.
Thank you for your question!

Abnormal vaginal discharge can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for addressing any potential health issues. Based on your description of experiencing a yellowish discharge with an unpleasant odor, it is important to consider several factors that could contribute to these symptoms.
Firstly, the color and odor of vaginal discharge can indicate various conditions. A yellowish discharge, especially if it has a strong or foul smell, may suggest a bacterial infection, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis is characterized by an imbalance in the normal bacterial flora of the vagina, leading to an overgrowth of certain bacteria. This condition often presents with a fishy odor, particularly after intercourse or during menstruation. On the other hand, trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite and can also result in a yellow-green discharge with a strong odor.
In addition to infections, other factors may contribute to changes in vaginal discharge. Poor hygiene can lead to an accumulation of bacteria and yeast, resulting in abnormal discharge. However, it is essential to note that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ, and excessive washing or douching can disrupt its natural balance, potentially leading to infections. Therefore, maintaining proper hygiene without overdoing it is crucial.
Regarding your question about whether hand masturbation could be related to the discharge, it is generally not a direct cause of abnormal discharge. However, if proper hygiene is not practiced before and after such activities, it could potentially introduce bacteria into the vaginal area, leading to infections.
To address your concerns, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, such as a gynecologist. They can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly laboratory tests, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. This may include testing for STIs, BV, or other infections. Based on the diagnosis, appropriate treatment can be prescribed, which may include antibiotics for bacterial infections or antifungal medications for yeast infections.
In summary, abnormal vaginal discharge, especially when accompanied by a change in color and odor, should not be ignored. It is essential to seek medical advice to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Maintaining good hygiene practices and being aware of any changes in your body can help you manage your reproductive health effectively. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider is key to addressing any concerns you may have regarding your vaginal health.
