Bone issues
Hello, doctor.
After the car accident, the left rib near my stomach has become protruded by 5 cm.
I had an X-ray, and the doctor said there was no issue.
I mentioned to the doctor that the triangular area of my left rib has become very prominent, but the doctor told me that some people naturally have different sizes of bones on each side.
After that, I didn't ask the doctor any further questions.
I would like to know if my original left and right ribs were parallel and of the same size and height, and now, after the accident, the left rib is protruding by 5 cm.
Is this really not a problem? Is it true that if the X-ray shows no issues, then there is no problem?

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
If the X-ray shows no bone tumor, then there is usually no concern.
Rib injuries can sometimes cause swelling, and at times, they may be fractures.
After a fracture heals, the area may become thicker or more prominent.
To determine if there is a relationship, X-rays serve as an initial examination.
If other pathologies are suspected, further investigations such as computed tomography (CT) scans may be necessary.

After a car accident, experiencing rib deformities can be concerning, especially when there are noticeable changes in the structure of your ribs. In your case, you mentioned that the left rib near your stomach has become protruded by about 5 cm, and despite X-rays showing no apparent issues, you are still worried about the implications of this change.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that rib deformities can occur due to various reasons, including trauma from accidents. When a rib becomes prominent or deformed, it could be due to several factors such as muscle spasms, inflammation, or even changes in the surrounding soft tissue. In some cases, the ribs may shift slightly due to the impact of the accident, leading to a change in their appearance.
The fact that your X-ray results came back normal is a positive sign. X-rays are typically used to assess for fractures or significant structural abnormalities in the bones. If no fractures or dislocations were detected, it suggests that the underlying bone structure is intact. However, X-rays may not always reveal soft tissue injuries or subtle changes in the rib cage that could contribute to the deformity you are observing.
It is also worth noting that anatomical variations in rib size and shape can exist naturally among individuals. Some people may have asymmetrical rib cages, which might not be clinically significant. However, if you have noticed a drastic change from your previous rib structure, it is reasonable to seek further evaluation.
If you are still experiencing discomfort or if the deformity is causing you concern, it may be beneficial to consult with a specialist, such as an orthopedic surgeon or a thoracic surgeon. They can perform a more comprehensive evaluation, which may include advanced imaging techniques like a CT scan or MRI, to assess the soft tissues and any potential underlying issues that may not have been visible on the X-ray.
In terms of treatment, if the rib deformity is not associated with pain or functional impairment, it may not require any intervention. However, if you experience pain, difficulty breathing, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to address these with your healthcare provider. They may recommend physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles, pain management strategies, or, in rare cases, surgical intervention if there is a significant structural issue that needs correction.
In summary, while your X-ray results are reassuring, the noticeable change in your rib structure warrants further investigation if it is causing you concern. Consulting with a specialist can provide you with more clarity and help ensure that you receive appropriate care based on your specific situation. Remember, it’s always better to seek a second opinion if you feel uncertain about your health, especially after experiencing trauma from an accident. Your well-being is paramount, and understanding the full scope of your condition is essential for peace of mind and recovery.
