After a collision..?
Doctor, excuse me, may I ask why the left rib became very prominent after the car accident? The emergency room's orthopedic department took X-rays and found no issues, and they said no further tests are needed.
Why did the left rib become prominent after the impact?
AVI, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/07/23
Dr. Hong Ximing reply Orthopedics
The prominence of the rib after impact is due to the healing process of the rib injury, which involves periosteal proliferation.
If there are no other symptoms, no further examination is necessary.

After a car accident, it's not uncommon for individuals to experience changes in their body, including the appearance of protruding ribs. In your case, the left rib protruding after the impact could be attributed to several factors, even if X-rays did not reveal any fractures or significant injuries.
Firstly, the rib cage is composed of bones that can be affected by trauma. When a rib is subjected to a forceful impact, such as in a car accident, it may not break but can still undergo changes. These changes can include displacement or misalignment of the rib, which might cause it to appear more prominent or protruding. This is particularly true if the surrounding muscles and soft tissues were also impacted, leading to swelling or inflammation that can accentuate the appearance of the ribs.
Secondly, muscle strain or injury is another possibility. The muscles that support the rib cage, such as the intercostal muscles, can be strained during an accident. If these muscles are injured, they may not provide adequate support to the rib cage, leading to a more pronounced appearance of the ribs. Additionally, muscle spasms or inflammation can contribute to this effect, making the ribs seem more prominent.
Another consideration is the possibility of soft tissue injury. Even if the bones are intact, the ligaments and connective tissues that stabilize the rib cage can be damaged. This can lead to a feeling of instability or abnormal positioning of the ribs, which may manifest as a protrusion.
It's also important to consider postural changes that may occur after an injury. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort, you might unconsciously alter your posture to compensate for the discomfort, which can lead to changes in how your ribs appear. For example, if you are favoring one side due to pain, this can lead to asymmetry in the rib cage.
In terms of management, if the protrusion is not accompanied by severe pain, difficulty breathing, or other concerning symptoms, it may not require further intervention. However, if you continue to experience discomfort or if the appearance of the rib changes, it would be advisable to follow up with a healthcare provider. They may recommend additional imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to assess the soft tissues and ensure there are no underlying injuries that were not visible on the X-ray.
In summary, the protrusion of your left rib after the car accident could be due to a combination of factors including muscle strain, soft tissue injury, or changes in posture. While your X-ray results are reassuring, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or if your condition does not improve. Proper rest, pain management, and possibly physical therapy may be beneficial in your recovery process.
