There is slight swelling near the neck close to the collarbone on both sides?
Hello, doctor.
A few days ago, I experienced discomfort in my throat and went to the hospital to see a doctor.
The doctor said my throat was red (which I assume indicates inflammation).
He asked if I had been drinking alcohol, which caused vomiting (I said no).
He mentioned that I had a bit of post-nasal drip and some phlegm in my throat.
He also inquired if I had gastroesophageal reflux (I confirmed that I do).
After that, he examined both sides of my neck and prescribed some medication for my throat and acid reflux.
However, when I got home, I noticed that the area near my collarbone on both sides felt slightly swollen (like a horizontal band).
I'm not sure what this symptom means, and I'm a bit worried...
Could you please help clarify?

Dear Mr.
Lu,
Hello, the slight swelling near your neck may be caused by an infection leading to inflammation of the cervical lymph nodes.
You can start with medication for treatment and observation.
If there is no improvement or if the swelling continues to increase, you will need to seek medical attention for a detailed examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
Swelling near the collarbone can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as a sore throat and post-nasal drip. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing throat inflammation, possibly due to an upper respiratory infection or allergic reaction, which can lead to post-nasal drip. This condition occurs when mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat, causing irritation and inflammation.
The swelling you are feeling near your collarbone could be related to several factors. One possibility is that it is lymphadenopathy, which is the enlargement of lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can swell in response to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. Given that your throat is red and you have been experiencing post-nasal drip, it is possible that the lymph nodes in your neck are reacting to the inflammation in your throat or sinuses.
Another consideration is that the swelling could be related to muscle strain or tension in the neck area, especially if you have been coughing or straining your throat due to discomfort. However, it is essential to differentiate between muscle-related issues and potential lymph node enlargement.
In terms of your concern about the swelling being indicative of a more serious condition, it is important to note that while swollen lymph nodes can be a sign of infection, they can also indicate other issues, including autoimmune diseases or, in rare cases, malignancies. However, the absence of other alarming symptoms, such as significant weight loss, night sweats, or persistent fever, often suggests that the swelling is more likely related to an infection or inflammation rather than a serious underlying condition.
Given your symptoms and the recent development of swelling, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as imaging studies (like an ultrasound of the neck) or blood tests, to assess the nature of the swelling and rule out any serious conditions.
In the meantime, managing your throat symptoms with over-the-counter pain relievers, staying hydrated, and possibly using saline nasal sprays or throat lozenges may help alleviate discomfort. If you notice any changes in the swelling, such as increased size, pain, or the development of new symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Overall, while the swelling near your collarbone can be concerning, it is often manageable and treatable, especially when addressed early. Your healthcare provider will be the best resource for determining the cause of the swelling and providing appropriate treatment options.
