Eustachian tube dysfunction is used for the ear?
Hello.
I have had a fungal infection in my ear for several years.
Previously, the clinic treated it with "MeiKang ear drops." Recently, I visited an ENT specialist who prescribed "Econazole" for me to use at home.
After using it for over a month, I returned for a follow-up with another doctor who said that this medication should not be applied to the ear.
I would like to ask if using it for almost a month could affect my hearing.
Also, is this medication actually suitable for use in the ear? (I checked online, and it appears that Econazole is an antifungal medication intended for external use, specifically for fungal infections of the skin and nails, but there is no mention of its use in the ear.) Thank you.

Dr. Huang Shenggang reply Pharmacology
Hello Mr.
Wu: Regarding the medication Youzuda R solution you mentioned, its indication is for dermatophyte infections, and it is applied topically to the affected area.
Therefore, when used in the ear area, there should generally not be significant issues if there is no allergic reaction or discomfort.
For your health, it would be more reassuring to consult an otolaryngologist for an examination of your ear and hearing.

When it comes to ear treatments, particularly with medications like Youzuda (also known as "優足達"), it's crucial to understand the appropriate applications and potential risks involved. Youzuda is primarily an antifungal medication designed for external use, specifically targeting fungal infections of the skin, such as those affecting the feet and nails. Its formulation is not typically intended for use in the ear canal, which raises concerns about its safety and efficacy when applied in that area.
Using medications that are not specifically formulated for the ear can lead to several complications. The ear canal is a sensitive area, and applying inappropriate substances can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even exacerbate existing conditions. In your case, if you have been using Youzuda in your ear for over a month, it is essential to consider the following points:
1. Potential Impact on Hearing: While Youzuda is not known to directly affect hearing, any irritation or inflammation caused by its use in the ear could potentially lead to temporary changes in hearing. If you experience symptoms such as increased ear pain, discharge, or changes in hearing, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
2. Proper Use of Medications: It is vital to use medications as directed by a healthcare professional. If a doctor prescribed Youzuda for your ear condition, it may have been a misunderstanding or miscommunication regarding its intended use. Always clarify with your healthcare provider about the appropriateness of any medication for your specific condition.
3. Consultation with Specialists: If you have concerns about the treatment you received, it is advisable to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can provide a thorough examination of your ear and assess any potential damage or complications from using an unsuitable medication. They may also recommend alternative treatments that are safe and effective for your ear condition.
4. Long-term Effects: If you have been experiencing ear issues for several years, it is essential to address the underlying cause of the fungal infection. Chronic ear problems can lead to complications such as hearing loss or recurrent infections if not treated appropriately. A specialist can help identify the root cause and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
5. Alternative Treatments: Depending on the nature of your ear condition, there may be more suitable antifungal treatments available that are specifically designed for use in the ear. These medications are formulated to be safe for the delicate tissues of the ear canal and can effectively address fungal infections without the risk of irritation or adverse effects.
In summary, while Youzuda is effective for certain fungal infections, its use in the ear is not recommended and could potentially lead to complications. If you have been using it in your ear, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to evaluate your ear health and determine the best course of action moving forward. Always prioritize treatments that are specifically designed for the area being treated to ensure safety and efficacy.
