It has been 8 years since my first menstruation, and it has not been very regular?
Hello, my first menstruation started when I was 10 years old, and it has been irregular from the beginning.
Sometimes it comes every two weeks (about 17 days), which means I have two periods in a month.
Other times, it comes less than 20 days after the previous month, and then the next month it doesn't come at all, resulting in a cycle of about 50 days.
In sixth grade, I had one instance where my period lasted continuously for a month, but the flow was very light.
At other times, the flow has been considered normal.
I previously sought treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to regulate my cycle for over two years, but it wasn't effective, so I stopped.
Throughout the year, about half of the time my cycle follows a normal 30-day pattern, while the other half is irregular.
I haven't been to a hospital for an examination, but my parents believe that one of my ovaries may have poorer function, which could be causing this issue.

Hello: It is common for menstruation to be irregular during the first one to two years after it begins, but since your irregularity has persisted for several years, I would recommend visiting a gynecologist.
A medical examination can help you understand your body and identify any potential issues, which should be beneficial.
Thank you!

Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern and confusion for many individuals, especially when they have experienced such fluctuations over a long period. Based on your description, it seems that you have been dealing with irregular periods since the onset of menstruation at the age of 10. This situation is not uncommon, and there are several factors that could contribute to irregular menstrual cycles.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that menstrual cycles can vary significantly among individuals. A typical menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. However, many factors can influence this regularity, including hormonal imbalances, stress, lifestyle changes, and underlying medical conditions.
In your case, the irregularities you described—such as experiencing periods as close as 17 days apart and as far apart as 50 days—suggest that there may be an underlying hormonal imbalance. The fact that you experienced a prolonged period in sixth grade, albeit with light flow, could indicate that your body has been struggling to maintain a consistent hormonal balance. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other endocrine issues can lead to irregular cycles and should be considered.
You mentioned that you sought treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for over two years without significant improvement. While some individuals find relief through alternative therapies, it is crucial to ensure that any treatment aligns with your specific health needs. If you have not yet consulted a healthcare provider, it may be beneficial to seek a thorough evaluation from a gynecologist or an endocrinologist. They can perform necessary tests, such as blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound to assess ovarian health.
Your parents' concern regarding one of your ovaries functioning poorly is a valid consideration. Hormonal imbalances can stem from various factors, including lifestyle, diet, stress levels, and genetics. For instance, excessive exercise, significant weight fluctuations, or high-stress levels can disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, leading to irregular cycles.
In addition to medical evaluation, lifestyle modifications can also play a significant role in regulating menstrual cycles. Maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress through relaxation techniques or exercise, and ensuring adequate sleep can positively impact hormonal health.
If you are diagnosed with a condition like PCOS or another hormonal disorder, treatment options may include lifestyle changes, hormonal contraceptives to regulate cycles, or medications to address specific symptoms.
In summary, while irregular menstrual cycles can be frustrating and concerning, they are often manageable with the right approach. Seeking a comprehensive evaluation from a healthcare professional can provide clarity and guide you toward effective treatment options. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and there are resources available to help you achieve a more regular menstrual cycle and overall reproductive health.
