Abdominal friction may cause pain?
Hello, doctor.
I have a question.
Currently, I feel pain in my abdominal area when I rub it with my hand, while other parts of my body feel normal.
I'm not sure what the issue might be.
Could this be related to improper massage techniques I experienced before? Thank you!

Dr. Lan Shengxing reply Neurology
Dear patient, if rubbing the area with your hand causes pain but not rubbing does not, it is more likely to be a localized skin or muscle issue.
You may want to visit the clinic for a more detailed examination.

Abdominal pain, especially when it is localized and triggered by friction or pressure, can be indicative of several underlying issues. The sensation of pain upon palpation or friction in the abdominal area can arise from various causes, including musculoskeletal problems, gastrointestinal issues, or even referred pain from other organs.
1. Musculoskeletal Causes: If you have recently undergone massage therapy, it is possible that the technique used may have inadvertently caused muscle strain or irritation. Deep tissue massage, in particular, can lead to soreness if the muscles are manipulated too aggressively. This can result in localized tenderness in the abdominal region, especially if the muscles or fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles) were over-stretched or injured during the massage.
2. Gastrointestinal Issues: Abdominal pain can also stem from gastrointestinal conditions. For example, conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause discomfort that may be exacerbated by pressure. If the pain is associated with other symptoms such as bloating, changes in bowel habits, or nausea, it would be prudent to consider these gastrointestinal issues as potential causes.
3. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the abdomen can be referred from other areas of the body. For instance, issues with the spine, such as herniated discs or nerve compression, can manifest as abdominal pain. Similarly, conditions affecting the kidneys or other abdominal organs can cause discomfort that feels like it is originating from the abdominal wall.
4. Inflammation or Infection: In some cases, inflammation of the abdominal organs, such as appendicitis or diverticulitis, can cause localized pain. While these conditions typically present with more severe symptoms, early stages may present with milder discomfort that could be aggravated by touch.
5. Anxiety and Stress: It is also worth noting that psychological factors such as anxiety can contribute to the perception of pain. Stress can lead to muscle tension, which may manifest as discomfort in various parts of the body, including the abdomen.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to monitor the pain closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or significant changes in bowel habits, it would be wise to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies or laboratory tests to rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while it is possible that the pain you are experiencing is related to recent massage therapy, it is essential to consider other potential causes. If the discomfort continues, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is recommended to ensure that any underlying issues are properly addressed.
