Foreskin Issues: Itchy Symptoms and White Discharge Explained - Urology

Hello, doctor?

Hello, doctor.
I apologize for bothering you again with questions.
I have already visited a clinic, and the doctor mentioned that the skin on my foreskin is slightly broken.
I have been prescribed medication and given ointment to apply.
Today, while showering, I used cold water to clean the inside and outside of the foreskin and noticed some white discharge.
Is that related? Also, although it doesn't hurt anymore, I sometimes experience intermittent itching on the surface of the foreskin.
Is this normal?

A Fei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/12/31

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, the white substance is smegma, which is produced daily and needs to be cleaned regularly.
It can cause itching, sometimes due to tissue repair, which is a temporary phenomenon.
As long as there is no further irritation, it should heal.
Wishing you a happy New Year and may all your wishes come true!

It sounds like you are experiencing some discomfort related to your foreskin, including itching and the presence of a white discharge. These symptoms can be concerning, but they are not uncommon and can often be addressed with proper care and treatment.

Firstly, the white discharge you observed could be a buildup of smegma, which is a combination of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture that can accumulate under the foreskin. While smegma is a normal occurrence, it can sometimes lead to irritation or infection if not cleaned properly. It's essential to maintain good hygiene by gently retracting the foreskin and cleaning the area with warm water. Avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals, as these can further irritate the sensitive skin.

The itching you are experiencing, even if it is intermittent, can be attributed to several factors. It could be a result of the healing process after the initial irritation or injury to the foreskin. As the skin heals, it may become dry or sensitive, leading to itching. Additionally, if there is any residual infection or inflammation, this could also cause itching.

If your doctor has already prescribed medication and a topical ointment, it's crucial to follow their instructions carefully. These treatments are designed to reduce inflammation, promote healing, and alleviate discomfort. If you notice that the itching persists or worsens, or if you develop new symptoms such as increased redness, swelling, or a foul odor, it would be wise to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In some cases, persistent symptoms may indicate a more significant issue, such as a fungal infection (like candidiasis), a sexually transmitted infection, or a condition known as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans and foreskin. These conditions may require different treatment approaches, so it's essential to keep your healthcare provider informed about your symptoms.

In summary, while some itching and discharge can be normal, especially during the healing process, it's essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Maintain good hygiene, follow your doctor's treatment plan, and do not hesitate to seek further medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or if you have any concerns. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing these issues promptly can help prevent complications and ensure a better quality of life.
