Post-Surgery Concerns: Numbness and Recovery After Varicocele Surgery - Urology

Postoperative issues?

Hello, Dr.
Hsu! I recently underwent laparoscopic varicocelectomy and am currently recovering well.
My back pain has disappeared...
I'm relieved it's not a bone issue! The left side seems to be more affected; two veins were ligated, and one was ligated on the right side as a preventive measure.
However, I have a question: the area below the left groin connecting to the spermatic cord and the upper part of the scrotum, as well as the nearby inguinal region, feels numb when I pinch it, almost like it's paralyzed.
Is this due to peripheral nerve numbness after the surgery? The right side feels the same as before, and I feel pain when I pinch it! Yesterday, during my follow-up appointment, the doctor mentioned that it would probably recover in two to three weeks...
Is it common to experience this numbness after surgery? Also, how long after the surgery can I resume exercising? I mainly do jogging and brisk walking (moderate exercise).
Currently, my wound is healing, and the doctor removed the surgical tape, saying it doesn't need to be reapplied, and I'm waiting for the sutures to dissolve! I would appreciate your advice and answers, thank you!

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

A-Jia: Hello, it could possibly be a nerve injury issue; it may also be due to localized swelling from the surgery, which temporarily compresses the nerve.
In any case, local heat application can enhance blood circulation and may lead to quicker improvement.
As long as the wound is not painful, there should be no restrictions on movement.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.
Responses from the internet should only be used as a reference; if necessary, it is important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

After undergoing laparoscopic varicocele ligation surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some numbness or altered sensation in the area surrounding the surgical site. This can be attributed to several factors, including the manipulation of tissues during surgery and the potential impact on nearby nerves.
In your case, the numbness you are feeling in the left groin area and the scrotum could indeed be related to nerve irritation or temporary nerve damage that can occur during the surgical procedure. The groin and scrotal regions are innervated by various nerves, including the ilioinguinal nerve and the genitofemoral nerve. During surgery, these nerves can be stretched or compressed, leading to sensations of numbness or tingling. It is reassuring to hear that your doctor indicated that this numbness is likely to resolve within two to three weeks, which is consistent with the expected recovery timeline for nerve-related symptoms after such a procedure.

As for your concerns about returning to physical activity, it is generally advisable to wait until you have fully healed before resuming any strenuous exercise. Most surgeons recommend a gradual return to physical activity, starting with light activities and progressively increasing intensity as tolerated. Since you mentioned that you enjoy jogging and brisk walking, you might consider starting with gentle walking as soon as you feel comfortable, and then gradually increasing the duration and intensity of your walks. It is essential to listen to your body and avoid any activities that cause pain or discomfort.

In terms of the timeline for returning to more vigorous exercise, many patients can typically resume light to moderate activities within two to four weeks post-surgery, depending on their individual healing process. However, it is crucial to follow your surgeon's specific recommendations, as they will have the best understanding of your unique situation and recovery progress.
Additionally, if you experience any worsening of symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or persistent numbness beyond the expected recovery period, it is important to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to assess the surgical site and ensure that there are no complications, such as infection or hematoma formation, which could affect your recovery.

In summary, while numbness in the surgical area can be a common postoperative symptom, it is usually temporary and resolves within a few weeks. As you recover, focus on gentle movements and gradually reintroducing physical activity, always keeping in mind your body's signals. If you have any concerns or if symptoms persist, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
