Post-Menstrual Health: Should You Drink Red Dates and Four Herbs Soup? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Drinking red date tea and Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction)?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about supplements to take after menstruation.
After my period, I usually start taking Si Wu Tang or drinks with red dates about seven days later.
However, I noticed that after consuming these, I immediately experienced signs of menstruation, like spotting.
After a few times, I stopped taking the supplements.
I also consume red dates in some drinks or desserts sold outside, and I notice spotting when I go to the bathroom, but it’s not my actual period.
Does this mean I am not suitable for supplements? How should I take care of my uterus in my daily life? In recent years, I have developed a habit of avoiding cold foods and drinks, and even if I do have them, it’s only once or twice a year.
I have also gotten used to drinking warm water.
I didn’t have similar issues before, but after the age of twenty-six, these problems started.
Fortunately, since I stopped taking any supplements, my periods have returned to normal, although the timing is not always consistent.
However, I have noticed more regular signs in my recent cycles.
Could you please give me some advice?

YoYo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/03/25

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the cause of your recent bleeding may be related to food or hormonal imbalance, and these two factors can interfere with each other.
Each individual's constitution can change over time.
I recommend that you reduce the intake of the foods you mentioned in your letter that may be causing the bleeding.
These foods may not have caused bleeding for others or even for you in the past, but since you are experiencing bleeding now, it would be wise to pause their consumption for a while and then reintroduce them later to see if the bleeding persists.
If the bleeding continues, I suggest consulting a physician for further evaluation.
For regular uterine care, it is advisable to maintain a consistent daily routine, eat a balanced diet, manage stress levels, and engage in appropriate physical activity.
This will help stabilize hormones and promote the health of the uterus and ovaries.
Wishing you peace and good health.

When it comes to post-menstrual health and the consumption of supplements like red dates and Four Herbs Soup, it's essential to consider both individual health conditions and the potential effects of these supplements on the menstrual cycle.
Firstly, red dates (jujubes) are often praised in traditional medicine for their health benefits, including improving blood circulation, enhancing energy levels, and providing essential nutrients. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin C, iron, and antioxidants. Similarly, Four Herbs Soup, which typically includes ingredients like angelica root, peony root, and others, is traditionally used to nourish the blood and support women's health, particularly after menstruation.

However, your experience of noticing signs of menstruation shortly after consuming these supplements raises some important considerations. It's possible that your body may be reacting to these supplements in a way that disrupts your hormonal balance. The menstrual cycle can be influenced by various factors, including diet, stress levels, and overall health. If you find that consuming these supplements leads to irregular bleeding or spotting, it might be a sign that your body is sensitive to them or that they are not suitable for your current health status.

Given that you mentioned a history of irregularities in your menstrual cycle after starting these supplements, it may be wise to pause their consumption and observe how your body responds. It's also important to note that individual responses to dietary supplements can vary widely. What works for one person may not work for another, and your body's needs can change over time, especially as you age.

In terms of general uterine health, maintaining a balanced lifestyle is crucial. Here are some recommendations:
1. Balanced Diet: Focus on a diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This will provide your body with the necessary nutrients to support hormonal balance.

2. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health. Drinking warm water, as you have adopted, can be beneficial, especially in traditional practices that emphasize warmth for digestive health.

3. Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity can help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve overall well-being. Aim for a mix of cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility exercises.

4. Stress Management: High stress can significantly impact hormonal balance and menstrual regularity. Incorporate stress-reducing practices such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises into your routine.

5. Regular Check-ups: Since you have experienced changes in your menstrual cycle, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a gynecologist or a specialist in women's health. They can provide personalized advice and conduct any necessary evaluations to rule out underlying conditions.

6. Avoiding Cold Foods: In traditional practices, it's often recommended to avoid cold foods and drinks, especially during menstruation or post-menstrual recovery. This is believed to support better digestion and circulation.

In conclusion, while red dates and Four Herbs Soup can be beneficial for some individuals, they may not be suitable for everyone, especially if they lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. It's essential to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional for tailored advice. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management will contribute positively to your uterine health and overall well-being.
