Postoperative Care Following Retinal Tear Laser Surgery
Hello, Doctor! I have myopia of about 700 degrees.
About a week ago, I had an examination of my retina and discovered a small hole in my right eye, so I underwent laser repair immediately.
The procedure was done in the evening, and afterward, I noticed a residual glare at the laser site, but I didn't pay much attention to it.
Shortly after, I went to bed.
The next day, I woke up to find that the glare was still present, and the area where the laser was applied felt like there was a dark fog obstructing my vision, along with a sensation similar to rippling water.
I can even feel it when I close my eyes.
Up until today (7 days post-surgery), the dark fog and rippling sensation persist.
I would like to ask what this phenomenon might be.
I have a follow-up appointment scheduled in 5 days.
Should I consider getting checked again before that? Thank you, Doctor!

Retinal traction may cause afterimages, while the wave phenomenon could be due to localized fluid accumulation near a tear.
If the area of the wave phenomenon expands, it is advisable to return for an examination as soon as possible.

More Info
After undergoing laser surgery for a retinal hole, it is not uncommon to experience a range of visual disturbances and discomfort. Your symptoms, including the persistent sensation of "afterimages" or "ghosting," the presence of a dark spot, and the perception of wavy lines or "water waves," are noteworthy and warrant careful consideration.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Afterimages and Ghosting: The laser treatment can cause temporary changes in the retinal structure, leading to visual phenomena such as afterimages. This occurs because the retina is sensitive to light and can take time to adjust after being stimulated by the laser. The brain may also take time to process the changes in visual input, leading to sensations of ghosting or lingering images.
2. Dark Spots and Wavy Lines: The feeling of a dark spot or "black fog" in your vision, along with wavy lines, could be related to the healing process of the retina. After laser surgery, the retina may experience swelling or changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye, which can create these visual disturbances. The wavy lines you perceive might be due to the interaction between the laser-treated area and the surrounding retinal tissue.
3. Vitreous Changes: The vitreous gel can also undergo changes post-surgery, which may lead to floaters or other visual disturbances. If the vitreous is pulling away from the retina, it can create sensations of movement or distortion in your vision.
When to Seek Further Evaluation
While it is good that you have a follow-up appointment scheduled in five days, if your symptoms worsen or if you experience any new symptoms such as flashes of light, an increase in floaters, or a sudden loss of vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of complications such as retinal detachment, which is a serious condition that requires prompt intervention.
Recommendations for Managing Symptoms
- Rest Your Eyes: Ensure you are giving your eyes adequate rest, especially after surgery. Avoid straining your eyes with prolonged screen time or reading.
- Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Adhere strictly to any post-operative care instructions provided by your ophthalmologist, including the use of prescribed eye drops or medications.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a close watch on your symptoms. If you notice any significant changes or worsening of your condition, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care provider before your scheduled appointment.
- Hydration and Nutrition: Maintain good hydration and a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for eye health.
Conclusion
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing after laser surgery for a retinal hole can be concerning, they are not uncommon. The healing process can take time, and many patients experience similar visual disturbances. However, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive about your eye health. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation from your eye care professional. Your vision is precious, and ensuring its health is paramount.
