It is not recommended to use wart cream during pregnancy?
Doctor, my wife is currently 7 to 8 weeks pregnant, and she has developed a small growth between the anus and the vaginal opening, close to the thigh area.
She says it is itchy.
The obstetrician asked if it has been growing, and my wife mentioned that it started small but has grown to about one and a half times the size of a grain of rice and has remained that size.
She had a similar growth five years ago, which was treated successfully with electrosurgery.
The doctor said she had this growth before pregnancy and wants to try using wart cream, but it states that it is contraindicated during pregnancy.
Is it safe to apply it on just one growth? Otherwise, electrosurgery seems a bit complicated.
Thank you.

Hello, generally, topical medications have minimal effects.
Local anesthetic electrocautery can also be considered, as it promotes faster healing and typically has less impact.
The medical information provided above is only a general guideline; the diagnosis and treatment of the patient's condition should be conducted in person, based on the judgment of the attending physician during the consultation.
Wishing you health, Dr.

When it comes to the use of wart cream during pregnancy, especially for treating warts located in sensitive areas such as the anal and vaginal regions, caution is paramount. Wart creams, particularly those containing active ingredients like salicylic acid or other keratolytic agents, are generally advised against during pregnancy. This is primarily due to the potential risks they pose to both the mother and the developing fetus.
In your wife's case, it is important to consider a few key factors. First, the fact that she is 7-8 weeks pregnant means that the fetus is in a critical stage of development. Many topical medications can be absorbed through the skin and potentially enter the bloodstream, which raises concerns about their safety during pregnancy. The label on the wart cream indicating that it should not be used during pregnancy should be taken seriously. While it may be tempting to apply the cream to a single wart, the risks associated with its use may outweigh the benefits, especially since the wart has not shown significant growth or change.
Moreover, the history of your wife having had warts previously treated with electrosurgery suggests that she has dealt with this issue before. While electrosurgery may seem more cumbersome than applying a cream, it is often a safer and more effective option for removing warts, particularly during pregnancy. Electrosurgery can provide a definitive solution without the risks associated with topical treatments.
If the wart is causing discomfort or itching, it may be beneficial for your wife to consult with her obstetrician or a dermatologist who specializes in treating skin conditions during pregnancy. They can provide a thorough evaluation and recommend the safest treatment options. In some cases, they may suggest alternative treatments that are considered safe for use during pregnancy, or they may monitor the wart until after delivery when more treatment options become available.
In summary, while the desire to treat a wart during pregnancy is understandable, it is crucial to prioritize the health and safety of both the mother and the unborn child. The use of wart cream is generally not recommended, and consulting with a healthcare professional for alternative treatment options is the best course of action. This approach ensures that any treatment is safe and effective, minimizing risks to both the mother and her baby.
