Post-diverticulitis complications?
Hello, Doctor.
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis in December of last year and was hospitalized for a week (without surgery) before recovering and being discharged.
After that, starting in February of this year, I have been experiencing persistent stomach rumbling, especially noticeable at night while sleeping.
Could this be related to the diverticula? Additionally, I have been having frequent bowel movements that are not well-formed; could this also be related to the aforementioned issue? (Generally, I have a bowel movement once every morning.)

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
Hello: The rumbling sound in the stomach is often related to more pronounced bowel sounds, which are usually associated with abnormal fermentation gases in the intestines.
It is recommended to supplement with probiotics to improve this condition.
If there is no abdominal pain or abnormal bowel movements, it may not be necessary to seek treatment.

Post-diverticulitis complications can manifest in various ways, and your symptoms of abdominal noises and changes in bowel habits may indeed be related to your previous condition. Diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection of small pouches (diverticula) that can form in the walls of the colon. After an episode of diverticulitis, it is not uncommon for patients to experience lingering gastrointestinal symptoms, which can include changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, and increased bowel sounds.
The gurgling noises you hear in your abdomen, especially at night, are often due to increased intestinal activity. This can occur as your digestive system continues to adjust after an episode of diverticulitis. The colon may be more sensitive or reactive, leading to increased peristalsis (the wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract), which can cause these sounds. While this is generally not a cause for concern, it is essential to monitor other symptoms that may arise.
Regarding your bowel movements, the fact that you are experiencing difficulty in forming stools could be related to several factors. After diverticulitis, some patients may develop changes in their bowel habits, including diarrhea or loose stools, which can be a result of altered gut motility or changes in the gut microbiome. Additionally, if you have been consuming a diet low in fiber or experiencing stress, these factors can also contribute to changes in stool consistency.
It is crucial to ensure that you are maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber, as this can help regulate bowel movements and improve stool consistency. Foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, can promote healthy digestion and prevent constipation. Staying hydrated is also essential, as adequate fluid intake can help soften stools and facilitate regular bowel movements.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as imaging studies or a colonoscopy, to rule out any complications related to diverticulitis, such as strictures or recurrent diverticulitis. Additionally, they may suggest dietary modifications or medications to help manage your symptoms effectively.
In summary, while your symptoms of abdominal noises and changes in bowel habits may be related to your previous diverticulitis, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. Maintaining a high-fiber diet, staying hydrated, and consulting with your healthcare provider if symptoms persist will be crucial in managing your post-diverticulitis complications.
