The penis has a thread-like growth?

Hello Dr.
Lee: Recently, I have noticed peeling of the skin on my penis, along with some debris that looks like skin flakes.
About a week later, I started experiencing itching around the coronal sulcus, and I have developed some white, thread-like lesions (about 10 pieces) that can be pulled off painlessly; these lesions are rough and slightly translucent.
I have also noticed a few more (currently 3 pieces) near the coronal area.
Could you please help me determine what my condition might be? Thank you, Dr.
Lee!

Hello: Based on the description provided, it is not possible to accurately diagnose the specific skin condition.
Skin peeling is typically a secondary reaction following inflammation.
If your condition persists without improvement, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis.
Thank you!

More Info

The symptoms you describe, including the presence of white filamentous growths on the penis, peeling skin, and itching around the corona, could be indicative of several conditions. However, without a physical examination, it's challenging to provide a definitive diagnosis. Here are some potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms.

1. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, benign, white or skin-colored growths that can appear around the corona of the penis. They are completely harmless and are considered a normal anatomical variation. They do not require treatment unless they cause psychological distress.

2. Lichen Planus: This is an inflammatory condition that can affect the skin and mucous membranes, including the genital area. It may present as white, lacy patches or lesions, and can sometimes cause itching or discomfort. Treatment typically involves topical corticosteroids.

3. Fungal Infections: Conditions such as candidiasis (yeast infection) can cause peeling skin and white patches. These infections can be itchy and may require antifungal treatment. The presence of white, flaky material could suggest a fungal etiology, especially if there is associated irritation.

4. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) that can be caused by infections, irritants, or poor hygiene. Symptoms may include redness, itching, and the presence of white discharge or flakes. Treatment usually involves improved hygiene and possibly antifungal or antibacterial medications.

5. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, rough, white or flesh-colored growths. They may be itchy and can vary in size. If you suspect this, it's essential to consult a healthcare provider for diagnosis and treatment options.

6. Contact Dermatitis: Irritation from soaps, lotions, or other products can lead to skin peeling and itching. Identifying and avoiding the irritant is crucial for treatment.

Given the variety of potential causes, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend tests, such as a skin scraping or biopsy, to determine the exact nature of the growths.

Treatment Options
- Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, treatments may include antifungal creams for infections, corticosteroids for inflammatory conditions, or other topical medications.

- Good Hygiene Practices: Keeping the genital area clean and dry can help prevent infections and irritation.

- Avoiding Irritants: Identify and avoid any products that may cause skin irritation, such as certain soaps or lotions.

- Regular Check-ups: If you notice any changes in your symptoms or if the condition worsens, follow up with your healthcare provider.

Conclusion
While the presence of white filamentous growths and peeling skin can be concerning, many conditions are benign and treatable. It is crucial to seek medical advice for a proper evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Early intervention can help manage symptoms effectively and alleviate any concerns you may have regarding your health.
