The duration of menstruation?

Hello, doctor: I have heavy bleeding three days before my period, and then it stops on the fourth day.
My menstrual cycle is 25-28 days.
Is this normal? It used to last seven days, but now it has changed.
Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your age, your menstrual cycle is within the normal range.
Each woman may experience variations in her menstrual cycle due to factors such as age, body constitution, environment, and lifestyle.
If your menstrual cycle is less than 21 days, more than 60 days, or if your period lasts longer than seven days, it is advisable to seek examination or treatment.
However, slight variations within this range are considered normal.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info

Understanding your menstrual cycle is crucial for assessing your reproductive health. A typical menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with the average being around 28 days. The duration of menstrual bleeding can vary significantly among individuals, but it generally lasts between 3 to 7 days.
In your case, experiencing a 4-day period with heavy flow for the first three days followed by a lighter flow or cessation on the fourth day can be considered normal, especially if this pattern is consistent with your recent cycles. It is also important to note that menstrual cycles can change over time due to various factors such as hormonal fluctuations, stress, changes in weight, exercise levels, and even age.

If your menstrual cycle has shifted from a consistent 7-day duration to a 4-day duration, it could be due to several reasons. For instance, hormonal changes, particularly in estrogen and progesterone levels, can affect the thickness of the uterine lining and the duration of your period. As women approach perimenopause, they may also notice changes in their menstrual cycle patterns, including shorter or lighter periods.

Additionally, lifestyle factors such as increased physical activity, weight loss, or stress can also lead to changes in menstrual flow and duration. If you have recently experienced significant life changes or stressors, this could also be a contributing factor.

However, if you are experiencing other symptoms such as severe cramping, irregular cycles, or any unusual discharge, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, including blood tests to check hormone levels or an ultrasound to assess the health of your reproductive organs.

In summary, a 4-day period can be normal, especially if it is consistent with your recent cycles and does not come with concerning symptoms. However, if you have any doubts or if this change is accompanied by other symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a good practice. Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help monitor your menstrual health and address any concerns you may have.
