I would like to ask the doctors about redness, itching, and pain of the glans penis!

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask about my glans issue.
Since around April, my glans has been red, itchy, and painful; sometimes it suddenly becomes very itchy and red.
Especially after masturbation, the entire glans becomes even redder, more painful, and itchier than usual, which has been bothering me for a long time.
During this period, I have seen two or three dermatologists.
Some doctors said it was eczema, while others suggested it was related to a fungal infection.
After taking medications and applying ointments from different doctors, I feel that there has only been improvement but no complete recovery.
Once I experience friction again, it becomes very red, itchy, and painful.
Could you please tell me what the issue with my glans might be? Should I continue seeing a dermatologist or consult a urologist? Thank you for your explanation!

Hello: Based on your description, it may be a fungal infection, but please visit a urology clinic for treatment to confirm the diagnosis.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding the symptoms you are experiencing with your glans (the head of the penis) is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment. Based on your description of redness, itching, and pain, especially after friction during masturbation, there are several potential causes to consider.

Possible Causes:
1. Contact Dermatitis: This is an inflammatory reaction of the skin that can occur due to irritants or allergens. In your case, it could be due to soaps, lotions, or even the friction from masturbation. Symptoms typically include redness, itching, and sometimes pain.

2. Fungal Infections: Conditions like candidiasis (yeast infection) can cause similar symptoms. This is particularly common in warm, moist areas and can lead to redness, itching, and discomfort. If you have been diagnosed with a fungal infection, antifungal treatments may be necessary.

3. Eczema or Dermatitis: As mentioned by some of the dermatologists you consulted, eczema can cause red, itchy patches on the skin. This condition can be exacerbated by friction or irritation, leading to the symptoms you describe.

4. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by poor hygiene, infections (bacterial or fungal), or skin conditions. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and pain.

5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): While less likely given your description, certain STIs can cause irritation and inflammation of the glans. If there is any possibility of exposure, testing for STIs would be prudent.

Recommendations:
1. Consult a Urologist: Given the location of your symptoms, it may be beneficial to see a urologist who specializes in male genital health. They can provide a more focused examination and may offer treatments that dermatologists might not consider.

2. Avoid Irritants: Until you have a clearer diagnosis, try to avoid any potential irritants. This includes harsh soaps, lotions, or any products that may come into contact with the area. Use mild, unscented products instead.

3. Practice Good Hygiene: Ensure that you are maintaining proper hygiene in the genital area. This includes gentle washing with water and avoiding excessive scrubbing.

4. Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, topical treatments such as corticosteroids for dermatitis or antifungal creams for yeast infections may be prescribed. Follow your healthcare provider's recommendations closely.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when your symptoms worsen. Note any activities, products, or foods that seem to correlate with flare-ups. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.

6. Avoid Friction: Until your symptoms improve, consider reducing activities that cause friction, such as masturbation. This may help prevent further irritation.

Conclusion:
The symptoms you are experiencing can be attributed to several potential causes, including contact dermatitis, fungal infections, eczema, or balanitis. It is essential to seek a thorough evaluation from a urologist who can provide a targeted diagnosis and treatment plan. In the meantime, avoiding irritants and practicing good hygiene can help manage your symptoms. Remember, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant immediate medical attention to rule out any serious conditions.
