Gynecomastia

Hello, doctor.
I have several questions regarding gynecomastia.
I have read the articles on this condition, and it has caused me significant distress, leading to feelings of inferiority and severely impacting my social life.
A few days ago, I visited a general surgery clinic recommended by the metabolic department at Cheng Kung University.
Upon entering, the doctor immediately referred me to another physician, Dr.
120.
By 11:30 PM, after just a few sentences, I was dismissed.
An ultrasound was performed, confirming gynecomastia, but I was told it was not a concern.
The doctor was unwilling to provide further explanation, and their attitude was quite uncomfortable, leaving me very upset.
This situation reminded me of my childhood experience with rheumatoid arthritis when my parents were told I was fine, only to later be diagnosed with the condition.
I was left speechless and walked away without my questions being answered.
My issues remain unresolved.
Therefore, I have the following questions:
1.
Which specialty should I consult for this condition? General surgery or plastic surgery?
2.
Are there any recommended hospitals in Tainan that perform this surgery, or in nearby counties?
3.
I read that there is health insurance coverage for this condition.
Is that still available?

Hello,
1.
Breast surgery or general surgery, plastic surgery is also an option.

2.
I am not very familiar with Tainan.

3.
Depending on the symptoms, if they affect physical or psychological conditions, surgical removal may be indicated, and it is covered by health insurance.

Wishing you peace and health,
Director of Surgery, Taoyuan Hospital, Department of Health, Chou Chia-Cheng.

More Info

Gynecomastia, or the enlargement of breast tissue in males, can be a distressing condition that affects self-esteem and social interactions. It is essential to understand that gynecomastia can arise from various causes, including hormonal imbalances, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. If you are seeking help and treatment options in Taiwan, here are some insights and recommendations based on your questions.

1. Which Specialist to Consult?
Gynecomastia is typically evaluated by a few different specialties. The most common specialists to consult are:
- Endocrinologists: They can assess hormonal levels and determine if there is an underlying hormonal imbalance contributing to gynecomastia.

- General Surgeons: They often perform surgical interventions for gynecomastia if it is severe or persistent.

- Plastic Surgeons: If you are considering surgical options for cosmetic reasons, a plastic surgeon with experience in gynecomastia surgery would be appropriate.

Given your experience at the general surgery clinic, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from an endocrinologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in gynecomastia.

2. Recommended Hospitals in Tainan or Nearby Cities:
In Tainan, you can consider visiting:
- National Cheng Kung University Hospital: This hospital has a good reputation and may have specialists in both endocrinology and plastic surgery.

- Tainan Municipal Hospital: They may also have general surgeons who can provide further evaluation and treatment options.

If you are open to traveling, you might also consider hospitals in nearby cities like Kaohsiung, such as:
- Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital: Known for its comprehensive care and specialists.

- Chung Shan Medical University Hospital: Offers various surgical options and has experienced surgeons.

3. Insurance Coverage for Treatment:
In Taiwan, the National Health Insurance (NHI) does cover certain treatments for gynecomastia, particularly if it is deemed medically necessary. This typically includes cases where gynecomastia causes significant physical discomfort or psychological distress. However, cosmetic procedures may not be covered. It is advisable to discuss with your healthcare provider about the possibility of insurance coverage for your specific situation.

4. Next Steps:
- Seek a Second Opinion: If you felt dismissed during your last visit, consider seeking a second opinion from another specialist. Look for a doctor who is willing to take the time to explain your condition and treatment options thoroughly.

- Document Your Symptoms: Keep a record of your symptoms, any medications you are taking, and how gynecomastia affects your daily life. This information can be helpful during your consultations.

- Explore Support Groups: Connecting with others who have experienced similar issues can provide emotional support and practical advice.

In conclusion, gynecomastia is a manageable condition, and there are various treatment options available. By consulting with the right specialists and exploring your options, you can find a path that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of this condition. Don't hesitate to advocate for yourself and seek the care you deserve.
