Redness of the penis?

Hello, doctor.
In the album at http://www.wretch.cc/album/bluevigin, I have a red area on the inner side of my penile foreskin.
The surface is not raised or wounded, and it feels normal to the touch.
I would like to know what this could be.
Is it syphilis?

Mr. Wu, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/06/21

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Mr.
Wu: Hello, the image is not very clear.
However, it appears to show localized inflammation and redness.
Syphilis? It doesn't seem likely, but it cannot be completely ruled out.
If there has been any recent unprotected sexual activity, it is advisable to undergo screening for syphilis and HIV.
Initially, a blood test should be done, followed by a second test three months later and a third test one year after the first test to completely rule it out.
Note: In rare cases, due to unique physiological conditions or subpar testing methods at certain laboratories, it may take over a year to detect the infection.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.
Responses on the internet should only be used as a reference; if necessary, it is important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

Understanding redness on the penis, particularly on the inner foreskin, can be concerning, and it’s important to approach this issue with a clear understanding of potential causes and when to seek medical advice.
Redness in this area can arise from several factors, and it is not always indicative of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as syphilis. Here are some common causes of redness on the penis:
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: The skin on the penis is sensitive, and irritation can occur due to various reasons, including soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents. Allergic reactions to condoms (especially latex) or personal care products can also lead to redness.

2. Infections: While STIs like syphilis can cause redness, other infections such as yeast infections or bacterial infections can also lead to similar symptoms. Yeast infections, in particular, are common and can cause redness, itching, and discomfort.

3. Dermatitis: Conditions like contact dermatitis or eczema can cause inflammation and redness. This can occur due to friction, moisture, or irritants that come into contact with the skin.

4. Peyronie’s Disease: This condition involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can lead to curvature and sometimes redness, although this is usually accompanied by pain or discomfort.

5. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin) can cause redness and swelling. These conditions can be due to infections, poor hygiene, or skin conditions.

6. Sexual Activity: Engaging in sexual activity can sometimes lead to temporary redness due to friction or irritation.
Given that you mentioned the area is not hard, does not have an open wound, and is not painful, it could be less likely to be a serious condition. However, it is essential to monitor the symptoms. If the redness persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, discharge, or changes in urination, it is crucial to seek medical attention.

When to See a Doctor:
- If the redness does not improve within a few days.

- If you experience any pain, itching, or unusual discharge.

- If you have had unprotected sexual contact and are concerned about STIs.

- If you notice any other unusual changes in the genital area.

Conclusion:
While it is natural to worry about potential STIs like syphilis, many other benign causes could explain the redness you are experiencing. It is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a proper examination and diagnosis. They may perform tests to rule out infections or other conditions and recommend appropriate treatment based on the findings. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
