Post-Myomectomy: Is Blood-Tinged Discharge Normal After Surgery? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

After uterine fibroid surgery, there has been persistent clear discharge with blood?

It has been exactly two weeks since my surgery (traditional surgery for multiple fibroids and adenomas, the largest being 10 cm).
In the last couple of days, I have suddenly experienced a lot of clear discharge with blood (both bright red and dark red).
Sometimes I feel sharp, needle-like pains in my abdomen.
Is this normal after surgery, or could it be related to my upcoming menstruation (which usually occurs around the 9th)? Thank you.

Hello: Based on your situation, it is advisable to visit an obstetrics and gynecology clinic to better understand your condition and receive appropriate explanations.
Of course, if you can return to the hospital where the surgery was performed for a follow-up, that would be the best option! Thank you!

After undergoing a myomectomy, which involves the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus, it is not uncommon to experience various symptoms during the recovery period. Your inquiry about the presence of blood-tinged discharge two weeks post-surgery raises several important considerations.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that some degree of vaginal discharge, including blood-tinged fluid, can be expected after a myomectomy. This is particularly true if the surgery involved significant manipulation of the uterus or if the fibroids were large, as in your case. The presence of fresh red blood and darker red discharge may indicate that the surgical site is healing, and some residual blood is being expelled from the body. This is generally a normal part of the healing process.

However, the timing of your symptoms is also crucial. If your menstrual cycle typically occurs around the 9th of each month, it is possible that the discharge you are experiencing could be related to your impending menstruation. Hormonal fluctuations leading up to your period can cause changes in vaginal discharge, including increased blood-tinged fluid. It is not unusual for women to experience spotting or light bleeding in the days leading up to their menstrual cycle, especially after recent surgery.

The sharp, needle-like pain you describe in your abdomen could be attributed to several factors. Post-surgical pain can manifest as sharp or stabbing sensations as the tissues heal and nerves regenerate. This type of pain can be a normal part of recovery, especially if it occurs intermittently and is not accompanied by severe symptoms such as fever, excessive swelling, or significant changes in discharge.

That said, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the blood-tinged discharge increases significantly, changes in color or odor, or if you experience severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately. These could be signs of complications such as infection, retained tissue, or other issues that may require medical attention.

In terms of management, it is advisable to maintain good hygiene and monitor your symptoms. If you are concerned about the amount of discharge or the pain you are experiencing, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon or healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend a follow-up examination to ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected and to rule out any complications.

In summary, while some blood-tinged discharge and abdominal discomfort can be normal after a myomectomy, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action. Your healthcare provider can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation and medical history.
