How long is it recommended to take progesterone?
Hello, doctor.
I previously experienced a miscarriage at four weeks, and this month I found out I am pregnant again (four weeks).
I visited an obstetrician who prescribed me three days of MORESAFE progesterone.
I would like to ask how long I should take the progesterone.
If I continue taking it, should I switch to natural progesterone? Additionally, is drinking chicken essence good for my health? I've also been feeling frequent urination; is that normal? Thank you, doctor!
Xiao Mi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/07/11
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, for patients who truly have a deficiency in progesterone, it is advisable to continue treatment until around 8 weeks when fetal heartbeat is detected and the situation stabilizes.
If the patient does not actually have a progesterone deficiency, observation and increased rest may be sufficient.
Natural progesterone is available and is generally considered better than synthetic progesterone; most hospitals should primarily use this type of natural progesterone.
As for frequent urination, it is a common early sign of pregnancy and should not be a major concern.
Consuming chicken essence is nutritious and beneficial for the body.
If you have any questions, please consult your obstetrician-gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.
Best regards, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Taipei Hospital, Health Department.

During early pregnancy, the use of progesterone is often recommended for women who have a history of miscarriage or who are experiencing complications such as bleeding. Progesterone plays a crucial role in maintaining the pregnancy by supporting the uterine lining and preventing contractions that could lead to miscarriage.
In your case, since you have experienced a miscarriage at four weeks in the past, your doctor has prescribed a short course of progesterone (in your case, MORESAFE) for three days. This is a common practice, especially in the early stages of pregnancy when the risk of miscarriage is higher. However, the duration for which progesterone should be taken can vary based on individual circumstances.
Typically, if there is a confirmed deficiency in progesterone or if there are signs of complications, doctors may recommend continuing progesterone supplementation until around the 8th to 12th week of pregnancy, or until a fetal heartbeat is detected. This is because the placenta begins to take over hormone production around this time, and the risk of miscarriage decreases significantly once the pregnancy is more established.
Regarding your question about switching to natural progesterone, it is generally considered that natural progesterone (bioidentical) may have fewer side effects compared to synthetic forms. However, the decision to switch should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider, who can assess your specific situation and provide personalized recommendations.
As for your inquiry about chicken essence (雞精), it is often considered nutritious and can provide a boost of energy and hydration, which is beneficial during pregnancy. However, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support both your health and the developing fetus.
Frequent urination is a common symptom in early pregnancy due to hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the kidneys. It is generally considered normal, especially as the uterus expands and puts pressure on the bladder. However, if you experience any discomfort, pain, or changes in urinary habits, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
In summary, the duration for taking progesterone during early pregnancy can vary, but it is often recommended until around the 8th to 12th week, depending on individual circumstances. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your pregnancy and medication. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and adequate hydration, is crucial for a successful pregnancy.
