Is this sexual dysfunction?
Hello Doctor, I have had the habit of watching adult films and engaging in self-stimulation since my teenage years (around 15-16 years old).
Recently, I noticed that when watching adult films, I can only maintain an erection for about 2 to 4 minutes, and sometimes I only experience enlargement without firmness, which leads to ejaculation.
However, I can achieve a full erection during morning erections, and I can also get an erection when I see something stimulating or think about more erotic things.
Am I becoming desensitized to adult films? Would taking a break from erotic material help improve this situation? I would appreciate your insights! Thank you!

Hello: This is not sexual dysfunction.
Watching adult films and DIY activities should be done in moderation.
At a young age, there are many activities to engage in, such as playing sports, running, cycling, swimming, and hiking, which can enhance physical fitness and promote blood circulation.
The penile corpora cavernosa require sufficient blood flow to achieve adequate rigidity, and you currently do not have any erectile dysfunction issues.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding sexual apathy, particularly in men, can be a complex issue influenced by a variety of psychological, physiological, and social factors. Your experience of having difficulty maintaining an erection while watching pornography, despite being able to achieve an erection in other contexts, suggests that there may be a few underlying causes at play.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that frequent consumption of pornography can lead to a phenomenon known as "porn-induced erectile dysfunction" (PIED). This occurs when the brain becomes desensitized to sexual stimuli due to the constant exposure to highly stimulating and often unrealistic sexual scenarios presented in pornography. Over time, this desensitization can make it more challenging to achieve or maintain an erection during real-life sexual encounters or even while watching pornography, as the brain may require more intense stimulation to respond.
Your observation that you can achieve erections in other situations, such as during morning erections or when exposed to erotic thoughts, indicates that your physiological ability to achieve an erection is intact. This suggests that the issue may be more psychological than physiological. The brain plays a crucial role in sexual arousal, and if it has become conditioned to respond primarily to the stimuli presented in pornography, it may struggle to respond to other forms of sexual stimulation.
Taking a break from pornography and other sexually explicit materials can be a beneficial step in addressing this issue. This period of abstinence allows your brain to recalibrate and regain sensitivity to sexual stimuli. Many individuals who have experienced PIED report improvements in their sexual function after a period of abstaining from pornography. This process can take time, and the duration of the break may vary from person to person, but it is often recommended to abstain for at least a few weeks to notice significant changes.
Additionally, consider exploring other aspects of your sexual health and well-being. Engaging in open communication with partners about sexual preferences and desires can enhance intimacy and reduce performance anxiety. Practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques can also help alleviate stress and anxiety, which are common contributors to sexual dysfunction.
If you find that your difficulties persist despite taking a break from pornography and implementing these strategies, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a urologist or a therapist specializing in sexual health. They can provide a more comprehensive evaluation and offer tailored advice or treatment options based on your specific situation.
In summary, your experience of sexual apathy may be linked to the effects of frequent pornography consumption, leading to desensitization. Taking a break from such materials, coupled with open communication and stress-reduction techniques, can help improve your sexual function. If issues persist, seeking professional guidance is advisable for a thorough assessment and support. Remember, sexual health is an integral part of overall well-being, and addressing these concerns is a positive step towards a healthier sexual life.
