Reducing DIY: Concerns About Sexual Function and Ejaculation Health - Urology

Want to quit DIY?

Hello Doctor, due to my previous frequent DIY sessions, I have been considering reducing the frequency.
I have successfully managed to control it to about twice a month.
However, I have some questions I would like to ask:
1.
In the past, I engaged in this activity frequently (about 10-12 times), and now that I have suddenly reduced it (to about 3 times a month), will this cause a decline in sexual function?
2.
The main reasons for successfully reducing the frequency are that my desire is not as strong and I have increased my physical activity.
However, I still ejaculate regularly (as I have read that prolonged retention can lead to prostate congestion).
Recently, during a few instances of watching adult films or ejaculation, I have noticed that my erection is not fully hard (about 70-80% hardness), and if there is no continuous or greater stimulation, it gradually softens.
Is this due to my low libido? Additionally, will ejaculating without achieving full hardness affect my health?

SD, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/10/05

Hello: 1.
No, don't worry too much.
2.
Engaging in other forms of exercise is beneficial for the body.
Low libido can affect the firmness of erections, but ejaculation does not impact the body when firmness is not complete.
Wishing you good health.

Reducing the frequency of masturbation, often referred to as DIY (Do It Yourself), raises several concerns regarding sexual function and overall reproductive health. Your questions touch upon important aspects of sexual health, and I will address them based on current medical understanding.

1. Impact of Reducing Frequency on Sexual Function: It is generally accepted that moderate masturbation is a normal and healthy sexual activity. Reducing the frequency from 10-12 times a month to about 2-3 times a month is unlikely to cause any significant decline in sexual function. In fact, many individuals find that reducing the frequency can lead to improved sexual experiences during partnered sexual activities. This is because excessive masturbation can sometimes lead to a desensitization effect, where the body becomes accustomed to a certain level of stimulation that may not be replicated during intercourse. Therefore, your decision to reduce frequency may actually enhance your sexual experiences in the long run.

2. Ejaculation and Sexual Desire: You mentioned that your sexual desire has decreased, which is a common experience when reducing the frequency of masturbation. Lower sexual desire can indeed affect erectile function. When sexual arousal is lower, it may be more challenging to achieve full erection hardness. However, this does not necessarily indicate a permanent issue; it may simply be a temporary adjustment period as your body adapts to the new frequency of sexual activity.
3. Erection Hardness and Ejaculation: Regarding your concern about achieving only 70-80% hardness during erections, it is important to note that while full erection hardness is often ideal for penetrative sex, it is not strictly necessary for ejaculation. Many men can ejaculate even with less than full hardness. However, if you consistently find it difficult to achieve satisfactory hardness, it may be worth exploring further. Factors such as anxiety, stress, and even the type of stimulation can play significant roles in erectile function.
4. Health Implications of Reduced Hardness: As for whether ejaculating with less than full hardness could affect your health, the answer is generally no. Ejaculation itself is a normal physiological process, and doing so with a less than fully erect penis is not harmful. However, if you notice persistent issues with erectile function or ejaculation, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

5. Maintaining Sexual Health: To maintain sexual health while reducing masturbation frequency, consider incorporating regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and stress management techniques into your routine. These lifestyle changes can improve overall well-being and may positively influence sexual desire and function. Engaging in open communication with sexual partners about desires and preferences can also enhance sexual experiences.

In summary, reducing the frequency of masturbation is unlikely to harm your sexual function and may even improve your sexual experiences over time. If you continue to have concerns about erectile function or sexual health, seeking advice from a healthcare provider specializing in sexual health can provide personalized guidance and support. Remember, sexual health is an integral part of overall health, and addressing concerns early can lead to better outcomes.
