There is discharge from the anus?
Hello Dr.
Ko, I am currently studying in the UK.
My diet and daily routine are normal, and I have not engaged in any inappropriate sexual behavior.
About a month ago, I experienced blood in my stool, which I suspect was due to an anal fissure.
Since then, my bowel movements have been completely normal.
However, almost every day after I have a bowel movement, I notice yellow discharge from my anus, which looks like I haven't cleaned properly and has a smell similar to that of rotten fish.
The situation worsens when I exercise or walk, but it does not occur at all while I am sleeping at night.
When I touch the area, it seems like there is nothing abnormal, and there is no pain, although I do experience occasional itching.
I researched online and suspect this might be an anal abscess.
Since I cannot return home for medical care in a short time and I have language barriers here, could you please suggest any urgent remedies or over-the-counter medications or ointments? This issue is really troubling me! I sincerely appreciate your advice!

An anal abscess is often accompanied by symptoms such as fever and anal pain.
If left untreated, it may resolve on its own, but in severe cases, it can lead to sepsis and even death.
Please do not take this lightly.
Most doctors can communicate in English, so you should ask your doctor, "Is this an anal abscess?" They should pay attention to your concerns and prescribe medication for treatment.
If it is severe, surgical intervention may be necessary.
If it is not an anal abscess, many anal conditions can be improved by modifying bowel habits and taking warm sitz baths.

More Info
Understanding anal discharge can be a complex issue, and it's important to approach it with care, especially given your recent experiences. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a yellow discharge from the anal area, which is accompanied by a fishy odor. This could potentially be linked to several causes, including but not limited to anal fissures, infections, or even conditions like anal abscesses.
Possible Causes of Anal Discharge
1. Anal Fissures: You mentioned a previous instance of blood in your stool, which could indicate an anal fissure. Fissures can cause discomfort and may lead to some discharge, especially if they become infected.
2. Infections: Bacterial infections can lead to discharge that may have a foul odor. Conditions such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also present with unusual discharge, although you noted no recent sexual activity.
3. Anal Abscess: An anal abscess is a collection of pus that can occur due to infection. This condition can cause significant discomfort and may lead to discharge, often with a foul smell.
4. Hemorrhoids: Swollen veins in the rectal area can sometimes cause mucus discharge, especially if they are inflamed or bleeding.
5. Dietary Factors: Sometimes, dietary changes can lead to changes in bowel habits and discharge. Foods that are high in fat or certain spices can affect the odor of bodily secretions.
Home Remedies and Over-the-Counter Treatments
While it is crucial to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis, especially since you are experiencing persistent symptoms, there are some home remedies and over-the-counter treatments that may provide temporary relief:
1. Warm Sitz Baths: Soaking in warm water can help soothe the anal area, reduce discomfort, and promote healing if there is any irritation or fissure.
2. Witch Hazel: Applying witch hazel to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and provide relief from itching.
3. Over-the-Counter Creams: Creams containing hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation and itching. However, avoid using them for extended periods without consulting a healthcare provider.
4. Dietary Adjustments: Ensure you are drinking plenty of water and consuming a high-fiber diet to prevent constipation, which can exacerbate anal fissures and discomfort.
5. Probiotics: Incorporating probiotics into your diet may help balance gut flora and improve overall digestive health.
6. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from scented soaps or wipes that may irritate the anal area further.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given your symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional, especially if the discharge persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, severe pain, or changes in bowel habits. If language barriers are a concern, consider seeking out clinics that offer translation services or bringing a friend who can help communicate your symptoms effectively.
In the UK, you can visit a local pharmacy for advice on over-the-counter treatments, or you may consider contacting a local health service like NHS 111 for guidance on how to proceed with your symptoms. It’s important not to ignore these symptoms, as they could indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires medical intervention.
Conclusion
While home remedies can provide temporary relief, they are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Your health is paramount, and addressing these symptoms with a healthcare provider will ensure you receive the appropriate care and treatment.
